I was doing the dishes when I got the phone call that would change my life. It wasn't life shattering like the last news I got actually it wasn't even news. It was my best friend Kimberly Palmiro. She was just calling to check up on me. We had stayed close even after she had moved and when she had heard the bad news about Alberto. She had come over on the first bus.
Once I was back on my feet again she had gone home, asking your boss for two weeks off on such short notice was shocking, but I was graceful she had helped me through the worst of it.
When she called me it was a day like any other, I had woken up, had a shower and made Brittany and myself breakfast. Nothing unusual at all, the phone call hadn't started out unusual either. She asked me how I was, I asked her about work.
I watched the light outside dim as the day came to an end, casting shadows across the counter. I rested a hand on the cold counter as I listened to what she was telling me and eventually started to clean it with my dishrag a bit absent mindedly.
She told me that the real estate firm that she worked for had an opening. I said that I hoped she got someone qualified because I had heard the horror stories of when you work with someone who can't do their job properly. You end up having to cover for them at every turn, and because of that you fall behind on your own work, simply because they can't even do the basics.
That was when she told me she had asked her boss if I could get an interview. I laughed it off as a joke since we lived so far away going to work every day in Detroit would be a nightmare. That was when she admitted to me that her real plan wasn't just to get me a nicer job it was to get me to move out there with her.
"It would be good for you, Lily Ann." She pointed out.
"I don't think I'm ready to make such big decisions about my life."
"Lily, when was the last time you did anything for yourself?"
I pondering this for a moment before answering, "last week I got my nails done."
I was trying to change the topic and for a moment it worked.
"Oh! What do they look like? Send me pictures please." She sounded so giddy it add me smile. My best friend had a habit of sounded way more excited then a situation called for. It was nice most of the time because it made you feel like you were one of the most amazing people on the planet. Of course other times it was really irritating, some things were not worth such a fuss.
"You didn't distract me." She said after I sent her pictures and she told me how good they looked.
"I figured as much." She had only tricked me.
"Would it really be so bad living close to me? Am I that horrible?" Her tone of voice told me she was joking around.
"Yes Kimberly, you're just awful to be around." I rolled eyes as I spoke and heard a deep sigh on the other end of the line.
"I know! Wanting my best friend to move to the same town as me is so selfish."
"Yes it is, you should feel ashamed of yourself."
She chuckled, "But seriously, it's a great place to live and I'm sure Brittany wouldn't mind."
"I'll ask her, she's been through a lot and her friends here have really helped her through it." I reminded her.
"Well you need friends around you as well." She states, " such as me."
I smiled at her enthusiasm, "I'll look into it."
"There is is small little house that I think would be perfect for you, it has three bedrooms and a balcony. Not to mention the back yard is huge! Seriously you could fit twenty five or thirty people easy." As she continued to go into detail about this house that would be perfect for me I sighed. Moving really would be a great thing for Brittany and myself, there were so many memories in this town now. Even the supermarket reminded me of Alberto the other day.
"Okay, Kimberly." I interrupted her, "I promise I'll think about it."
"One more thing." She said, "If you did come down you might be able to work with me, my boss is this really nice guy and when I told him about your resume he said he would look. That was about a week ago, but yesterday he asked me if you were coming down or not. So clearly he liked what he saw or he wouldn't have cared."
I smiled, that would make the transition easier for sure, "Kimberly. I can't make this decision over the phone."
"Sure you can, I could even take the listing of the house down." She said, "I'm right at the computer."
If she had been in front of me I would have rolled my eyes at her, as it was I sighed and started twirling my hair around my finger, "I need a second to think about this Kimberly. Moving halfway across the country takes energy and money and I need to make sure I have both."
"You will seriously look into it?" She asked and I felt like I had just given her permission for something.
"Yes."
"Than I'll get off the phone so you can make arrangements." She said, "Goodbye, call me if you need any help."
"Kimberly..." The line went dead against my ear and I sighed and looked at my phone, had I just agreed to move?
