I paced back and fourth in front of the captain's office, waiting impatiently for someone, anyone to come out and tell me I could go home.
Suddenly, I came to a halt when the captain's door opened, and the same officer that had driven the boy and I here stepped out.
"Dean Winchester, may I have a word?"
It took me a second to make myself eventually give him an answer, even though it was only a simple nod. For some reason the abruption of his request froze me in place. He closed the door and took in a deep sigh, placing his hands on his hips. I neatly folded my hands in front of me, giving him all ears.
"So...that man, Castiel Novak, he's an accountant from Milwaukee, Winscosin working for Dick Roman Industries who had just gotten a big promotion to send him here to Lawrence for the day. Apparently he had just gotten off the train from his office stationed in Milwaukee and took the normal route he had been taking all morning to get some papers from his office, but got pulled into that alleyway by the unknown suspect, being threatened with a handgun."
"My god," I replied with a shudder. "I can't even imagine that experience, first time in quiet, sweet Lawrence and you're already getting mugged."
The officer shook his head, in a way to agree to my comment, and continued.
"You know, normally with cases like these we normally find that the suspect would be a troubled teenager, but right now we're working on finding the killer involved in a double homicide so all men that are reported must be investigated thoroughly. And the hockeymask with dark hair has been a common description given to us despite the fact that it is so vague." The officer inferred. "And uh, here's the thing though Mr. Winchester..."
My eyebrows knitted into a concentrated fashion, listening to every word he said. "Yes?" I said.
He looked around for a second before coming back to my eyes. "Mr. Novak was only supposed to stay here for tonight and he's expected to leave tomorrow morning," he began. "But...since we want to continue the investigation...we were wondering if you knew of any place that Mr. Novak could stay at until we can make sure he is safe. A hotel or something."
I thought for a moment, then it hit me. I had no wife, no kids. I always had the possibility to work from home...perhaps this route would lead to a new friendship too. I've always wanted company...this could at least give me a little until he is to return home.
"Officer if you're comfortable," I started, making his eyebrow rise. "He can live with me until he is able to return to Milwaukee."
He looked me over a few times before nodding his head slowly. "You sure, son?"
"Positive officer," I smiled, "always happy to help."
A big grin came to his face as he patted me on the back and opened the captain's door. "I'll inform the captain now," he beamed.
◇
Two hours had passed until finally the captain's door opened. I took a peek inside and discovered a huge stack on paperwork placed on the captain's desk, the boy—I mean — Mr. Novak was signing the top paper.
The officer that had spoken to me walked out, awkwardly scratching the back of his neck. Mr. Novak followed closely behind him, hair in a tangled mess and briefcase still soaked from the rain that continued to pour down outside. It was getting worse now, the storm, I was actually starting to feel a bit nervous now. I was actually going to take this guy to my house and let him stay with me for...ah who knows how long?
