Chapter 5
I was hiding behind a giant tree, panting, trying to slow down my heavy breathing. I feel like I've been running for hours. Maybe I have. I forgot to put my shoes on so I had been running bare foot. With every slow step, I winced.
I ran through bushes and shrubs, running away from the three wolves that were chasing after me. I didn't realize that our pack territory was so close to Jensen's. It just didn't make sense why. And I left just like he told me to, I didn't want trouble, yet here he was, chasing me with his brothers.
I lost them ages ago, but I felt like running further. I jumped at anything because I felt like they had found me. Earlier, they almost caught me but I'm guessing the adrenaline pumping through me was the thing that kept me going.
"Emma?" My wolf said groggily.
She's awake! She finally made it through!
"Are you feeling okay?" I asked hesitantly.
"I feel, tired." she huffed.
"We need to phase." I thought.
"That way we can get to some unmarked territory quicker." I told her, emphasizing the word "unmarked."
"No." She said flatly.
"Why not?" I asked, agitated.
"Just no." She said before huffing again.
Great, back to square one. We just phased recently! Why can't we now?
"Why can't you just tell me!" I thought angrily.
"Because I don't want to!" She said, mirroring my tone.
I decided not to speak to her anymore, instead I broke into another sprint. I ignored the nagging of constant pain underneath my feet. I just had to get further away from where I was. I had a feeling that if I stayed here or anywhere near them, I'd be left for dead.
Thirty minutes later, I was still running. Although I did have a few breaks in between but I continued to run.
"Slow down, you can only go so fast on two feet." She finally spoke.
"Then change." I thought angrily again.
She stayed quiet at that. Big surprise!
I ran until I could no longer handle the pain that was pulsating throughout my leg. It was to the point where I tripped on my own feet and fell face first onto the dirt floor.
I stayed on the floor, lying flat as my feet ached and my heartbeat echoed throughout my body. The ringing in my ears telling me how quick it's going. My chest was rising against the flat ground. My head felt like it was going to burst. I have never ran like that in my whole life. It was too much!
A few minutes later, I turned around to lie on my back. When I did so, my back cracked and I let out a relieved sigh. I closed my eyes and tried to calm my heart. I felt my face flush as my body was cooling down.
I opened my eyes to see where I was and all I saw were trees covered in moss. There wasn’t much telling of where I was. I sat up to grab my pack. I got out my water bottle and looked at my feet. There were cuts on the bottom. A few tiny pebbles were lodge in some of the cuts but I was able to take them all out while wincing at the pain.
I cleaned my feet with the water and saw my feet turn from brown and dirty to clean. They were achy but never mind that. I rolled my socks on and put my shoes on. I stood up and groaned in pain as my feet began to hurt once again.
“Screw it, a few cuts won’t kill me.” I said out loud. But it wasn’t the fact that they had cuts. What also contributed to them hurting was the fact that my feet were sore and swollen.
I walked around aimlessly. I had no idea where to go and everywhere I went all I saw were trees and more trees. I looked up and finally saw a little clearing that the tree leaves didn’t cover. The sky was a tinted orange. How long was I resting for?
“My guess about an hour, two hours?” My wolf said in a matter of fact tone.
I didn’t even realize that the time went by quickly! I need to find a place to rest otherwise, I won’t be alive to see the next morning.
I walked quickly to find a tree that was, thankfully, unmarked.
“Can we mark this?” I asked my wolf.
“Well, you’d have to phase but I don’t want to.” She said lamely.
Oh well, she’s no help, I’ll just sleep on the tree branch. Climbing up was hard work. One, my feet hurt and two, my pack was annoying and in the way. You’d think that when you leave a pack and go solo, you’d need only the things you can’t live without.
I closed my eyes and quickly drifted off to a peaceful sleep.
*
Peaceful sleep my butt. If I thought I was sore yesterday, then hell, I was wrong! My whole body was sore and also hurt from the poor sleeping choice.
“Never again am I sleeping in a tree.” I muttered under my breath.
“That was a one-time thing.” I said louder.
Just like last time, I walked around, not knowing where I was. But hey, at least I was away from the whole pack that was after me for some unknown reason.
"Help! Help!" I heard a voice shout up ahead. On instinct, I ran towards the source and found a girl being cornered by three black wolves.
"Uh, Just hold on. I know what to do." I called out to the blond girl.
Um, do I know what to do? Of course not! But I need her to be reassured.
Right, so you want to know my greatest idea? I smacked them with my pack. Because smacking them on the head with a lightweight pack does a lot of damage.
After I had my run-through with hitting them, they stopped advancing on her and began to crouch and growl at me.
I dropped my pack and began to back up. So apparently, my little escapade seems to be short lived. Every corner I turn, there seems to be trouble for me with any pack. I just wanted to leave in peace!
I saw the girl stop her struggle and looked at me while crossing her arms.
"And the fish bites again." The blond smirked before turning into a wolf, a black fur wolf, the same as the others.
Lovely.
She ordered the three other wolves to back down as she crept towards me. With each step she took, I took two steps backwards to get more distance between the two of us. She gave me a menacing wolfy grin before lunging at me.
She sunk her teeth into my thigh and I fell to the ground, groaning at the pain. She remained on top of me as she delivered a paw across my cheek, nails extended.
Before fading into the pain and darkness, all I saw were the wolves returning to their human forms and all I felt were my wrist and ankles being roped up.
