Gabe strolled up the street on his way to the only liquor store open late at night, but he had to pass by Alabama Moon to get there. Every time he saw the hanging sign outside the club it caused his heart to break. Good memories of the rundown place flooded his memory. This time he wasn't alone on the leisurely stroll. The man walked beside him stopped at the crosswalk to stare at him. Gabe blushed at the handsome man. "Don't ya worry about Sweet Momma, she gonna be alright," his companion said reaching to touch the side of his beard. Gabe looked over his shoulder at the building. A faint sound of a sad song drifted towards them.
"Can we stop for a drink? I want to see her." The man pulled him in for a quick kiss. Two men kissing on the street could have given the police a reason to harass them, but Gabe didn't care. "Anything for you," he said turning towards the club.
The closer they got to the building the music grew louder. They stepped inside looking around. Sweet Momma sat on the edge of the stage with her legs crossed at the ankle. The old barkeep smiled at them when they sat at the bar. "What'll it be?" He asked them.
Alabama Moon's bar
Gabe leaned into his man smelling the scent of his aftershave. "Moonshine like I like it, make two." The barkeep tipped his hat at them then started pouring the drinks. Sweet Momma was so lost in the song that she didn't notice them. A few people milled around. It was too early for the club to start hopping. It hadn't been the same since Honey left anyway. The piano man plunked away at the keys keeping in time with Sweet Momma's voice ringing out over the empty dance floor. The place looked good but held a certain sadness.
The officer that once harassed Gabe before walked in sitting down at the bar. "Evenin fella's," he said taking off his police cap. Gabe eyed him while sipping his drink from the mason jar. He nudged his man motioning to the officer. "We got any problems officer?" His companion asked boldly. The officer put up his hands. "None at all, but I got a tip that them French boys is on the way back here and they got Honey with em. You fella's know anything bout that?"
Both Gabe and his man shook their head. "No Sir." The officer slapped his hand on the bar and got up to leave. Gabe returned to listening to Sweet Momma's song swaying with the music. She finished singing putting the microphone back on the stand. The piano player took a break while Sweet Momma noticed Gabe at the bar. Her drunken gait staggered over to him.
"Gabriel sweetheart. I didn't think I'd see ya again." She hugged him tightly forcing his face into her full bosom. Then, she noticed the gentleman sitting next to him. "My aren't you gorgeous!" They talked for a while. She'd thought that closing the club seemed like the right thing to do, but just couldn't bring herself to do it. "It might neva be what it used to be, but she's still my bitch," Sweet Momma pointed to the barkeep asking for a water. Gabe eyes widened with surprise.
