Jang-min’s P.O.V. (You)

I woke up to the sound of a beeping noise,  thinking it was my alarm. I open my eyes, quietly whispering  to myself, “It was a dream. It was all a dream.”  As my eyes adjusted I found myself in the safe room.

I looked around and found the source of the beeping. It was a security camera that showed a bunch of men escorting my parents out of the house and into a big black car. I looked at the other little screens and saw that there were more men and women searching the rooms. ‘There were cameras in my room? Oh no, does that mean they saw me sneak out? There’s no way I mean nobody used this room until now.’  I think to myself until I see someone looking through my diary and I start to get mad.

I look at the other screens and see two figures in my parents bedroom. One is a female and the other is male but both of their faces are covered by a black mask. They weren’t any different than the rest of the crew but what seemed odd was that both of them were just standing in one part of the room, moving their hands in the air while things in the room were moving either towards them or away from them.

Using the mouse I clicked on the screen to get a better look. As I zoom in, one of the figures suddenly turns their head towards the camera as if they knew I was watching, the camera goes black. Shocked and not knowing what else to do I look back at the screen showing the front yard and see both my parents are beaten and tied up. I bite my lip to keep myself from crying as I see them get dragged into a car.

According to dad the walls in the safe room are sound proof but I don’t want to risk getting found, after all the figure in my parents bedroom seemed to know that I was watching. I waited until I saw all the figures leave the house and make their way to the car then I let everything out. The crying went on for a while until I got tired and decided to sit on the floor. That’s when my stomach growled. I looked at the mini fridge that my dad had installed not too long ago and prayed that there was food in there. I opened it and found a bottle of greek yogurt.

Jang-min: “Oh well,” I thought to myself as I reached for it, “Better than nothing.”

As I was about to start eating it I realized that there was no spoon, sighing I brought the yogurt to my mouth and drank it. I looked back at the screens and saw that the camera in my parents room was back online. Confused, I looked at the camera showing my room and saw that my printer had not been moved so I decided to print out some pictures to take with me.

As I was scrolling through my camera roll I found a picture of me and my parents on my 15th birthday. We always celebrated our birthdays as if it was the last one we would ever have together but this one was special. We went to the amusement park with my friends and had a blast. It was the best. I thought nothing of it because we always go somewhere fun for our birthdays but now that I think about it I realise why they did it. My eyes started to get watery again so I just decided to hit print and move on. I ended up printing out 16 pictures including the one from my birthday.

They were all normal pictures, Some included me and my best friends, others me and my parents and one that included me and my crush. He and I had been paired together for the science fair and we ended up winning 2nd place. It was the best 3 weeks of my life. I know this is cringy but when he came over to my house I imagined it as if we were dating. I had decided that today was the day I was going to confess to him but I guess I’ll never get the chance. I decided to text my friends and tell them that I was going to be late for school.

Text:
Jang-min: ‘hey guys I just wanteD tO let you kNow That I’m running a bit late and won’t be able to meet you guys For breakfast.’

Lisa: ‘bye! Love yah!’
Jennie: ‘ok, me too. love you. bye!’
Jang-min: ‘bye ❤️’

I turned off my phone and then threw it at the wall as hard as I could. I kept hitting it and stepping on it until it was broken into pieces. ‘There,’ I thought to myself, ‘Now they won’t know where I am.’ I didn’t realize I dozed off until I woke up three hours later. ‘It’s ten thirty-four.’ I said as I looked at my watch realizing that it was time for me to do what my parents had told me to do earlier. I looked at the screen making sure that the house was empty then I slung the backpack over my shoulder.

Then I  got out of the safe room and cautiously made my way to my bedroom. As I was walking through the house I made a mental list of what I was going to take. I got to my room and took out my suitcase that was on the top shelf in my closet. I opened it and started packing my clothes. Once I was done with that I got my duffel bag from under my bed and started stuffing my duffle bag with, clothes, toiletries, a hair brush, combs, hair ties, nail polish, my jewelry box, make-up, a box of masks to cover my face, shoes, my dairy, my three favorite stuffed animals and my blanket, my cd's and cd player since I got rid of my phone, my earbuds, the pictures that I printed, a pillow, two towels, and the school supplies in my school backpack. I decided to change my clothes and tie my hair up. Then I made my way to my parents room. I entered their room and decided to take my mom’s jewelry box and favorite dress with me. Then I took my dad's favorite watch and hoodie and headed out the door.

After that I took my things downstairs and made my way to the kitchen.
I grabbed an apple, a banana, and a water bottle. I would only be traveling for 7 hours and I could grab something to eat on the way there. I headed out the back door and went to the hidden path in the forest behind my house. Before I left I looked back at my house for the last time.

Jang-min: “Good-bye.” I said sadly as I made my way down the path with my stuff for the last time heading towards the nearest bus station. I got to the bus stop right as the bus showed up. I raised my mask up over my nose so that people wouldn't see my whole face. I got on the bus and headed to the Wave bus terminal where I had a boring trip.

When I got to sector 5 I took a bus that would take me to the farthest part of sector 5. There weren’t as many people on this bus as there were on the other one. I had eaten the apple and banana and finished the water bottle while I was making my way to sector 5. I reached the last bus stop and got out, taking all my stuff with me. Then I took out a map that I had picked up when I arrived in Hwacheon and started to make my way to the Deadly Mountains

Time Skip:
As I looked at my watch, I saw the stream my dad had told me about, my watch reading 6:28 p.m.
I bent down and touched the water. Then I decided to wash off the make-up I had put over the mark on my wrist. That’s when I heard a twig snap. I jerked my head towards the sound.

Jang-min: “Who’s there?” I yelled through my mask trying not to sound scared. The sun had already started to set and it was hard to see anything through the thick trees.

Jang-min: “I know you're there!” I said as I heard a sigh then a figure came out from behind a nearby tree. They had their hands up as if signaling that they meant no harm.

???: “Alright, alright you caught me.” said the figure as they took off their mask.
