Where Were You?

It had been 8 months since you last saw Niall. He had left for tour telling you that he loved you but never contacting you again. You had called, texted, and left voice mails but he never replied. You hated going to the grocery store. You always got strange looks and today your ankles were swollen more than ever before. But you had to get supplies because in a few shorts weeks it would be hard to go out on your own. You walked to the Isle searching for pickles and cottage cheese. That had seemed to be a weird craving of yours. You used one hand to support your back while putting things in the cart with the other. You reached for the pickles that were shoved back on the top shelf. Frustrated, you stood on your tippy toes and strained your arm to reach them. Just when your finger glided across the jar, you felt your stomach contract. You rubbed your stomach and did your best to breath through the Braxton Hicks. "Let me help," you heard a familiar voice say. You looked over to see a frazzled looking Niall staring at you 8 month pregnant belly. He walked beside you and reached to the pickles that he knew that you had always liked the best. "Thanks," you sighed, worried about what you would say to him. He took a step back but slowly approached you and pulled you into a hug. Confused, you let your arms stay by your side. All your emotions began to swell inside of you. He let go and again stood back, still looking at your belly. "You look great," he grinned but his eyes were full of hurt. "They say that pregnancy makes you glow," you smiled trying to lighten the mood. His gaze fell to his feet. "Is it mine?" He bluntly asked, a twinge of disappointment in his voice. "Well considering I haven't ever been with anyone else, I would hope so," you retorted. He looked at your face for the first time. "Why didn't you tell me?" He puffed, a tear now filling his eye. "Really. You want to blame me. I tried calling you, Niall! I even called the boys but they always said you weren't around. I left you voicemails. I texted you. Heck I even called your family. But you know what, you are right. This is my fault. I should have never believed that you would love me once you were gone. So I'm sorry that this happened but I wasn't going to ruin a child's life by terminating it just because it might have ruined yours. Congratulations. You win again!" People were starring and Niall was clearly upset but so were you. Another inch of pain shot through your spine, as another contraction came. The doctor had told you that stress could cause Braxton Hicks. You doubled over trying to regain your breath. Niall rushed to your side, holding your back in one hand and your hand in his other. The false contraction quickly passed. "I don't need this kind of stress in my life. It isn't good for MY baby," you softly said. "Our," he replied. Your eyes grew wide. "Excuse me?" "It's not good for OUR baby," he said still by your side. You turned away from him and continued to push the cart around the store. Niall was following behind you. The both of you silent. Occasionally he would put something in the cart but you chose to ignore his actions. You finally had everything so you approached the counter to check out. "We need to talk," Niall whispered in your ear. "That will be $72.34," the lady behind the counter said. You rummaged through your purse for your wallet. "I'll get it," Niall said reaching for his back pocket before you could locate your wallet. You thanked the lady for her help and pushed the cart to the car continuing to ignore Niall. He helped you load the groceries into trunk of the car and opened your door for you. "(Y/N). We really need to talk," he said again but this time loud enough for the people around you to hear. "Fine, " you said through gritted teeth, only not wanting to cause another scene. He walked to the passenger side and got in like he had so many times before. You drove in silence to your apartment. Your parents had kicked you out. It wasn't acceptable to be 17 and pregnant in their eyes, so you got a job and found a place to live. You were now 18 so you could get a good job. You were taking online classes because you only wanted what was best for your baby. "Is this your place?" Niall asked as you pulled into the parking lot. "It's the best I can do with what I make," you crossly said back. You didn't say anything else but he helped you out of the car and grabbed the groceries to follow you to your door. "I wasn't expecting guests," you turned to him before unlocking the door. He nodded signaling for you to continue. You led him to the small kitchen that was attached to the living room. "I like it," he stammered. "Like I said. I'm doing the best I can." He grabbed your shoulders and turned you toward him. "I'm sorry," he said as tears glided across his cheeks. "What exactly are you sorry for, Niall? The fact that I'm pregnant or the fact that you never called?" "I'm definitely not sorry that you are pregnant but I'm sorry it happened so soon. And yes I am very sorry I never called. I was scared, (y/n). I was scared that it would hurt to bad to hear your voice and not get to see you so I just stopped picking up the phone and I hate my self every day for doing that because I may have lost the greatest thing that has ever happened to me." You couldn't believe your ears. You felt bad for being so mean to him. "Niall," you whispered, "where were you when my first ultrasound was happening? Where were you when I found out the sex of the baby? Where were you when I was assembling a crib by myself?" You were no longer mad but you did want him to understand how hard it was to do all these things without him. "I was in your heart but I'm here now." You began to cry. He was the same Niall that you had fallen in love with. He pulled you into a hug. This time you grabbed onto his shirt and let the tears fall. His nose was nestled into your hair. It felt so familiar. So comfortable. You really had hoped that he would come back. "Niall," you sniffled, "what are you doing here?" He was silent for a minute. "I came back for you." "Really?" "Yes because I couldn't go another day without seeing you. I needed to hear your voice and to know that you were okay. And now I know that I need to be here with you." "But the tour." "We have a two month break. Then we are going to be here in the UK touring so I will never be far away." "So what does this mean?" "It means that I am going to be here for the rest of your pregnancy and I am going to be the best dad that I can." You were speechless so you just hugged Niall again. "Wait," Niall spoke making you jump. "What are more we having?" "We are having a beautiful little girl." Tears filled Niall's eyes once again. He bent down to be level with your stomach. "Hello there beautiful. I know that I'm not a very familiar voice to you as of now but I'm plan of changing that. So princess, I hope you are smart like your mom. And boy do I hope that you have her award winning smile. I will teach you how how to play guitar if you want or soccer. Gosh I can't wait to meet you. I am going to keep you safe and love you. I hope it's not too late and that you will accept me. So what what do you say?" Just then another contraction came. This one was stronger than before. Your eyes grew wide. "Niall," your breath hitched. "I don't think she can wait to meet you either!"
