2015
"Follow me to your table please." The waiter told us, bringing us to the back of the room, at one of the more private tables. The restaurant had a rooftop garden and glass windows all around, so you could see a magnificent view of Barcelona at night. It was breathtaking.
"This is nice." Neymar said and smiled at me after we sat down. "Thank you for organizing everything."
"Anything for my Ballon D'Or winner."
He chuckled. "I'm not yet Liv. Probably not gonna be."
"If not this year, then next. Or the year after. But it's coming." I told him and he smiled, reaching from across the table to put his hand in mine.
"You have no idea how much it means to me to hear you say that. And to have you here in Barcelona with me. You're making my house feel like a home."
"And I'm really glad that I'm here with you." I told him and I smiled too, unable to hide my happiness. It was true, that the two of us together, by ourselves, we worked. We clicked. I was happy, so happy I couldn't have imagined would be possible before.
The only dent in an otherwise ideal situation was that I was still not anywhere closer to figuring out what to do with my life. I still had money thankfully, because when I was in Russia I didn't really have to spend any of the money I earned, but I still needed to look for something here in Barcelona, even if Neymar said I didn't.
The waiter appeared then and we ordered some drinks. "Could you take a photo of us?" I asked him and he happily obliged. I got up and joined Neymar on his side of the table as we posed for a photo. "Thank you." I told the waiter. "This is going up on our site."
Neymar smiled. "I love that you still maintain that. Maybe one day we can make it public." He said. "Or not." He added when he saw my expression.
"Oh, I didn't tell you the news." I told him, getting back to my seat. "I spoke to my brother today. He called to congratulate you on your nomination but you were sleeping. And he told me that someone from Everton reached out to his agent."
"Really? That's great news. Premier league."
"I know, it's amazing. Ever since he went to England I feel like things are picking up for him."
"I'm glad. He deserves it. And he's a good player, from what I've seen."
"It's insane you guys haven't played together yet." I told Neymar. "But maybe we can amend that, because I told him he should come visit us. If that's okay of course."
"It's more than okay! You don't have to ask me, ever." Neymar told me.
I chuckled. "Alright, noted. Maybe he can convince Marina to join him too."
"For the trip to Barcelona or for moving to Liverpool?" Neymar asked me.
"I don't know about that. I think they've talked about it, but they aren't there yet."
Neymar looked at me quizzically, but then the waiter came and brought our drinks. "Do you think we weren't there yet?" He asked me, when he left.
"Moving in together you mean?" I asked him and he nodded. "It's a little late to ask that question, isn't it?" When he didn't say anything, I continued: "In a way I think we were there ages ago."
"This is such an Olivia answer. Beats me, what you're trying to say."
I laughed. "One day, when I was back at university, I had a conversation with your sister where she pointed out that you and me were not like her and Alex, or any other couples in fact." I told him, recalling Rafaella's words. "She said we're not two people who chose to be together, we are one soul split in two people. And I think I feel like that."
