I OPENED MY EYES AT THE SLIGHTEST, feeling cool wind brush roughly against my face almost immediately. I don't remember exactly how I managed to fall asleep. After my dramatic mental breakdown in front of Julia, I partially recall us going down to the dining hall to confiscate multiple snacks that we managed to eat in one night."You really are a heavy sleeper. I've been waving this darn pillow in your face for about two minutes now."Julia snickered as she gave my head a light smack with the pillow that remained in her arms.
I smiled lightly, rolling my eyes before turning around to face the wall. "You should get up. I know your class starts at nine this morning." Julia yawned, walking back over to her side of the room. "My professor is unfortunately out today. He told us he was taking care of some mild family issues, so he's probably gonna be out for a few days actually. News flash, life's great."
"What? You're so damn lucky. Apparently, none of my teachers have sudden dramatic life events interrupting their personal lives to cause an absence. Do they even have a personal life?" She scoffed, tossing her pillow on her bed. I turned back around to face her, smirking. "Probably not. School is like a second home for most teachers ya know? It's like they never leave." I joked.
She briefly shook her head, rolling her eyes. "Anyway, how are you feeling? You know...after..."
I glanced at her as she trailed off her sentence, locking her eyes onto me as I allowed my head to firmly rest against the headboard. I tucked my lips in out of nervousness, figuring out what to say while staring down at my hands before answering, "I'm okay, honestly. I really needed that last night, and I appreciate you for being here for me when not even my family is willing to be. This whole—situation is just certainly overwhelming and my freedom feels nothing like what it is supposed to feel like. It's been literally five months since it happened and honestly I--"
Being interrupted, Julia's phone began blasting her ringtone indicating that someone was calling her. She shifted around back to her bed to retrieve her phone and went inside the bathroom, wanting her privacy. I stared hard at the ceiling, thinking maybe if I stared long enough, it'll certainly bring me back to reality and every single crumbling piece around it. There's no telling how long I have until they start bringing me in again for questioning about what happened. In the actual beginning, a few days after they confirmed Masons' death, a detective brought me to the station for third time and verbally abused the power he had against my own will. What did my family do about it? Absolutely nothing. After that day, I clearly realized under most standards that my family will very much likely do whatever it takes to make myself look untenable.
Since they strongly believe I had everything to do with Mason's death. To worsen everything, especially for me......I don't even remember everything that even occurred that night. Only I know that piece of information though. I knew better than to wet off that to anyone.
"That disappointingly was my naive of a sister who apparently hasn't learned her lesson yet." Julia cut into my deep thoughts, coming out of the bathroom. I sat up again and watched quietly as Julia went through her mini closet, pulling out a light pink hoodie with words designed across the front and back. She threw on her hoodie and quickly put on her shoes.
"What's going on?" I asked, running a hand through my morning hair.
Julia shot up from the floor, "Remember that time I first introduced you to my family and we spent the night there at my parent's house?" She questioned me as she slid her phone in her hoodie pocket, I tilt my head at a short refresh of memory, "Yeah, I remember. Your sister came over for dinner with that one guy who works at a food market right?" I answer, going into my mini-fridge for a breakfast sandwich. I'll have to grab a coffee soon down at the cafe if I'll be up. "Yeah, his name is freaking Jaxon. He is the most manipulative jerk I've ever met in my entire life. Ever since she's been with the guy, her eyes have become blind to the world. He literally keeps her in the house all day when he's not at work, and constantly deceives her by telling her that he's all she needs, and being the person that my sister is, she genuinely thinks he's right."
