Chapter - 8
                      Midnight reassuring talks

Disclaimer: I do not own any of the Riordanverse characters except Intrise and a few minor characters that I might add. Everything belongs to the awesome troll Uncle, the one and only Rick Riordan, and you'll find that I am not him.

* Third person point of view *

IT was quite late, and the demi gods were trying to fall asleep on their hammocks.
Well, at least most demigods.

Perseus was trying to fall asleep when he heard something that was sure be the footsteps of a human- or demigod. Wait, there had to be more than just one person.

He picked up his trustworthy pen, Riptide- which could turn into a sword at any point he chose to flip her cap off- and slowly got into an attacking stance even though it was dark and he could barely see anything.

The footsteps came closer and closer until the people were right outside his door, and he could see slight light beneath on the threshold.

The ship was swaying gently, and while it made it harder for him to stay still, he kept his stance, ready to defend himself if needed to.
He was sure the door might open any minute and anything could happen when-

"Hey Percy are you- Woah, why do you have Riptide with you?"
The door swung open only to reveal Intrise, his old friend behind it, standing there with a lantern and a confused look.

"Uggh, Seaweed Brain must have thought that we were attackers coming to murder him in his sleep or something."
A blonde figured shouldered her way to the hammock that was shown to Percy and flopped down on it.

"I- no, well- IT wasn't- I needed to be safe, didn't I?", Percy spluttered.

Intrise laughed, and made her way into the small cabin given to Percy and sat down on one of the boxes.

"I suppose it never hurts to be ready to defend yourself.", she said.

Percy shook himself out of his daze and sat down beside her.

"Well," he said, "care explaining? How are you here? Is it just both of you on this quest? Why didn't Clarisse pick any of her siblings? Why did you come with her?".

Intrise chuckled.

"For one, yeah, I'm here to explain and would love to. I'm here because Clarisse asked me to come along. Yes, it's just both of us in this quest officially, I guess you can't really count the undead. Clarisse wanted some warriors to stay back and protect camp, and well, other reasons to why none of her siblings are here. I came with her because I knew she couldn't have done this alone, and because even Clarisse needs help and support from time to time. Besides, everyone has their own story, and there are things you don't know as well."

Percy exhaled softly, having held his breath the entire time. He looked across the small cabin to find Annabeth playing with her Yankees baseball cap, a gift from Athena on her 12th birthday. If she put it on, she could turn invisible. He wanted to ask her what she was thinking about, but he knew better than to annoy her when she was thinking.

"Look, Clarisse is rash, she needs someone who'll be able to to talk some sense into her. Besides, everyone needs some moral support. I needed help with training as well. Who's a better sparring partner than the daughter of Ares? Except the son of Poseidon of course." Intrise gently said, clearly seeing the slight look of hurt on Percy's face.

None of the kids said anything for a while, and there was a certain tension in the air, until finally, Percy nodded.

"I get it."

Intrise smiled, and then turned to Annabeth.
"Hey, you alright?" She gently asked, "You don't look good."

"I'm fine. It's just, I'm wondering how many days till we sail into the Sea of Monsters? What will we face there? With Seaweed Brain's luck, we'll end up battling pirates and worse monsters. Will we even get back to camp in time?" , she rambled on.

"Don't worry Annabeth. We will get back to camp in time, and we'll go back with the fleece. And whatever monster we'll face, you won't be alone. We're a team, right? We can do this." Intrise reassured the daughter of Athena.

Annabeth didn't look convinced, but tried for a smile. "I guess you're right."

Percy put on a serious gave and turned to Annabeth. "Hey, we don't know what we'll face, but we have always made an awesome team, right? We can make it out together. You're the strategist, and I can always kick some monster butt if it helps. The sea is my father's domain, we can try using that too. We also have Tyson, Intrise and Clarisse. We won't go down on this one, camp depends on us. We will somehow get the fleece back to camp and then kick Luke where the sun doesn't shine for everything that he has done."

Annabeth smiled, "That's right, Seaweed Brain. I'll figure something out. Athena always has a plan."

The other two groaned at the infamous Athena saying that they had heard only too many times, and the third laughed. Soon, Intrise and Percy joined in, and the three teens relaxed for a while.

Then there was silence, each thinking about the mission, and wondering what will happen. A certain awkwardness slowly filled the silence, and sensing so, Intrise got up, and picked up the lantern she had brought along.

"Now all's fine and dandy, but even us demigods need sleep, and hope the nightmares aren't that bad.", she said.

"They'll be worse for me, with my luck." Percy mumbled.
The three cracked a smile, and said their goodbyes.

"Sleep well, Seaweed Brain, and keep Riptide near you, you never know when someone will attack you, right?" Annabeth called back with a glimmer of humour in her eyes.

"Don't go making plans at the middle of the night, Wise Girl, you'll need your beauty sleep.", he shot back.

"Night Percy!", the girls called out and set off for their own cabins, giggling at Percy's attempt to throw a jab back at Athena.

Percy fell into his hammock, wondering about the future and slowly drifting asleep, not knowing what tomorrow will bring.
