"Y/n," my mother leaned into my ear and whispered, "is he your boyfriend? He's cute."
"Do not embarrass me mother," I pulled my shirt collar over my face.
"Don't be like that y/n," she lightly smacked my arm. "It's nice to meet you... What was your name again?"
"Tanaka Kenshin, ma'am," Hawks bowed, his fake glasses glistening in the light.
"No need to call me ma'am, I'm only thirty-five!" my mom smacked me, again. "Are you and y/n dating? I was wondering why you got dragged here to watch such a boring meeting."
"Mother! We-"
"Are, actually," Hawks grabbed my hand, "I'm surprised y/n never told you Mrs. L/n."
"No, call me mom. Y/n never tells me these things!" another arm smack.
"What!? No, mother-"
"I couldn't possibly," Hawks waved his arms.
"Nonsense! You are my future son-in-law after all," my mom grasped his hands.
"What!? Mother, we aren't engaged yet!" my face was getting hotter and hotter.
"Yet. I'm sure with him as your husband, your kids will be very well-mannered," she smiled at me.
"Eh!? Who said anything about kids? I told you not to embarrass me!" my shirt collar was seeming less and less comfortable.
"Y/n said something about... was it, seven kids?" Hawks was enjoying it way too much.
"Seven? That's quite a few, I can barely handle one," she said. That much I can attest for.
"You have a meeting, don't you? We should probably go do that," my eye twitched.
"Ah, yes! We'll talk later then Kenshin!" my mom trotted forward.
I grabbed Hawks by the collar and whispered, "I'm going to kill you."
"Whatever you say Tanaka-san," I wanted to slap the grin off his face.———
"I love your work," my mother fingered through the design portfolio, "we would love to have you as a sponsor for, 異議あり! (Objection!): Love and Conjecture, Tokyō. Our next episode was actually meant to highlight the murder of the wife of a rich politician. We haven't recorded anything as of yet, so we could always include your jewelry as a prominent product placement during the episode."
"That would be perfect. Thank you for meeting with us," the ash blonde woman crinkled her nose until her sunglasses lifted. "We can work out more precise details over email. I hope to see you soon."
"You as well," my mother shook the blonde's hand, "good day."
"Yes, good day," the woman bowed and left the room, not bothering to grab her files.
"She was lovely, wasn't she darling?" my mother stacked her files and straightened them against the table.
"Oh- Yes. Haw- Kenshin and I are going to stay behind," I handed her a paper she had forgotten.
"Alright, I'll be waiting in the car then," my mother kissed my forehead and walked into the hall.
"If we weren't in public, I would choke you," I sighed and rubbed my temple.
"Kinky. I thought we weren't dating y/n," Hawks shuffled my hair.
"You know what I mean... I can't believe you told my mom we were dating. Now she's gonna tell daddy, and he's gonna want to have dinner with you, and we aren't even actually together!"
"She would've kept asking questions. Besides, dinner sounds nice."
"I'm just surprised she didn't ask about your black Party City wig and that tacky grey suit, being all extra."
"The suit is not tacky-"
"It so is. Where did you get it?"
"I got it a long time ago."
"Right, I forgot that you're an old man. You meant to say, 'Back in my day, there weren't any of those Calvin Klein suits. All we had were the clothes our mommas made us and what the military gave us when we went to war,' right?"
"I'm not that old..."
"Sure, sure. Okay, let's do what we came here for," I filtered through the binders the blonde had left on the table.
"As you wish Tanaka-san," Hawks turned to a corner shelf.
"Stop calling me- Wait. Your wings! The wig and suit were so off-putting I didn't even notice!" I just realized they were different.
"Oh, those old things. Long story," he went back to picking through files.
"What do you mean long story? They're blue."
"Yeah, they are. You know, it's really your fault though."
"Huh? What do you mean by that?"
"Nothing," he looked at the papers again.
"It's not nothing. C'mon, tell me."
"Just this whole thing. You know..."
"You mean the und- Mmph!" He put a hand over my mouth.
"Yeah that. They look a little bit different because of the Mmph. So, it kinda is your fault."
"Don't mock me! You were the one being so insistent on it. Also, June was the one who decided you would go in the first place," I too busied myself with the files.
"If you insist Tanaka-san."
"Shut up."
"Is that...? Take a look at this," Hawks held one of the files in his hands.
"No..." there were a multitude of pages full of information on Bea. Her birthday, Individual Number, age, height, but most jarringly, a full page on her quirk, and a list of blood tests.
"It's definitely the right place," he slid the file under his suit jacket.
"That means..." my stomach dropped and twisted into a pretzel.
"She could be somewhere in this building, but we can't jump to any conclusions just yet-"
"What if something bad's happened to her, what if-"
"We have a lead now, so we can't let any of the employ-"
"What are you two still doing in here? Our meeting ended twenty minutes ago," the blonde with sunglasses was standing in the doorway.
"So sorry! Just admiring the architecture," I winced. "My fiancé and I were considering building our own home instead of buying. Just taking in as many ideas as possible! It truly is a lovely building."
"Yes, I see. Well, I'm sure the exterior architecture would be more to your liking," she removed her sunglasses. "Good day."
"Indeed, good- BEA!?" I stood still, mouth fully ajar.
"That's...?" Hawks stared blankly at the blonde.
