Sam threw together the rest of the sandwich, careful not to bump the counter with the part of his arm that was not protected. Everyone always assumed that he, as an equine, with his silky fur would not shed it near the workspace. Every time an assumption like that came up, Sam would roll his eyes and wave the person off.
His boss had told him: "If one more customer comes to me complaining about how some brown fur wound up in their sandwich, I'm letting you go." Sam's one and only warning.
"All done," he told his co-worker, Kellen, who was a young brown kobold and the newest addition to the staff team. He was still figuring things out, still uncertain about his position and if he would mess things up, and he would tenderly share this with Sam when they were both on break. But Sam knew full well that the guy was more than capable for the job.
Kellen took the Italian Sub and began the process of wrapping it up for the waiting customer. When he finished, he stuck the little green sticker where the plastic bag would unfold and he handed it off to the woman. It didn't take long to go through the transaction.
When the woman left the place, and everything inside fell silent aside from the humming fans above their heads, Sam and Kellen shared a look behind the counter. Kellen had this free expression on his face, glad the restaurant was devoid of customers, glad the daily buzz was over. Sam smiled.
"You act like this job's all taxing and stuff," said Sam, and Kellen grinned.
"I just know I'm that much closer to going home. I've got the day off tomorrow."
"Hey, same here." Sam paused. Home. For some reason, that word set something off inside him. His insides turned to mush, his stomach curling up. "Uh, are you hungry by chance?"
Kellen's head tilted to the side. "Well, that's one weird question to ask in a restaurant. But to be honest, yeah. I could eat." His eyes trailed off down toward the segment in the counter that stored the meat. He flicked his scaly brown tail. "I could go for some meat right now."
Sam gulped. "Break's in twenty minutes. I got some meat I . . . brought with me if you want it." Kellen didn't notice how Sam's face flushed in the restaurant lights.
"That sounds great~!"
