bent in the shower

Macy's ears were too full of drowsy distortion for him to be able to hear the rush of shower water in the bathroom.

He rubbed his eyes with minuscule effort, wiping away the crust that had collected during his sleep, and reached his paw out for the doorknob. When he opened the door, a warm wave of steam emerged from its threshold, covering him in a thin, invisible moisture for an instant.

Macy looked around. The shower was on, the glass was fogged up to a point where he could not see past the white, but he went on anyway. With such a tired state of mind, he could care less whether there was an intruder in the shower or not.

The only thing he hadn't considered before coming in was that Alex, the love of his life, wasn't in bed when he awoke.

Macy stood at the sink, running water through his fur. He would occasionally flick his eyes up at the mirror in front of him, glance at his reflection and tell himself it wasn't the real him. It seemed like a cycle of staring up and down at himself, off and on, until a voice from the shower broke his trance.

"Hey, babe, can you come here for a second?" Alex's voice. Macy turned and faced the foggy shower ledge, still unable to see through it, and he went to the door.

"Yeah?"

"I just need you to wash my back. I've got some spots I can't reach." Macy stepped back and peeled his clothes off. Getting in would technically mean taking a shower earlier than he would've liked, but he supposed he didn't mind.

Macy, now undressed, stepped into the shower and shut the door to keep the steam contained. Without a word, he came to Alex's rear and slung the wash cloth across his back, scrubbing gently.

"You feeling alright?" Alex asked, clearly trying to create small talk.

Macy kept scrubbing. "Yeah."

"You're a bad liar."

"I know."

Alex grabbed a bar of soap off the soap dish, holding onto its slick body and suddenly feeling mischievous. He knew Macy wouldn't be able to resist.

"I think I know how to cheer you up," he said, but Macy didn't budge. Alex let the soap slip from his grasp; it hit the ground with a soft thud.

Both of them stared idly at it, the sound of shower water masking their silence.

"Oh dear," said Alex, "I dropped the soap." Macy watched him slowly bend over.
