Chapter VI

Adam Groff Must Die

"So, how was your date with new kid," Adam asks Friday morning on the way to school.

"Wasn't a date," Abby says. "It was a business thing, sort of. Was getting it squared away before tonight's meeting"

"Heard 'im and Tromboner talking about it in the cafeteria," Adam says. "Just admit it was a date."

"Wasn't," Abby says. "We just...hung out, okay? We're just hanging out."

"Hanging out," Adam says. "...The hell does that mean? Abby, I swear, if that little shit is trying..."

"It's my idea, okay," Abby says. "I don't want drama and shit, like you and Aimee. Besides, we're not even really doing anything."

"Not really doing anything," Adam repeats. "Dear God, Abby, tell me you at least let him cop a feel. Because he's definitely going to friendzone you if you act hard up."

"Dude, what do you expect," Abby asks. "Am I supposed to have hooked up with him or not let him try anything? Make up your mind!"

"I'll make up my mind when you've made up yours," Adam shoots back. "Anyway, what happened?"

"Do you want to know because you're my friend, or do you want to know so you have an excuse to beat Otis up?"

"I'll decide after you tell me what happened."

"I'm not telling you if it means you might beat him up," Abby says.

"God, just tell me," Adam begs. "You know you will eventually."

"Fine," Abby says. "We kissed and it was kinda freakin' magical! Happy?"

"...Ew."

Abby shoves Adam as they walk toward the front gate of the school. "You asked, A-dumb," she says. "Anyway, how did it go walking by St. Agnes yesterday?"

"They love a bit of rough over there," Adam says. "Even the nuns wanted me. Some of them played a bit hard to get, but the meeting today's gonna be a bloodbath. I already made a date with two girls for this weekend. So, you know, you've got alibi duty."

"You're feeling good about yourself today, huh," Abby notes. "Well, anyway, Otis is coming round mine after the meeting, so I probably won't be running into your dad."

"New kid's coming round yours already? Shit, No Cups, 'just hanging out' my ass, when's the wedding?"

"Never, because we're not dating," Abby says, "and he's not my boyfriend. We just like each other and we're going to hang out."

"I'm pretty sure that's how that Juno girl got pregnant, No Cups," Adam says.

"Well, we aren't having sex, either, necessarily, okay, so chill," Abby says.

"So, basically, both of you are freaking nerds who don't know what you're doing," Adam says as they finally walk into school.

"Look, I'm sure he knows a bit more than I do, so I'll just...let him guide the way."

"Maybe I should convince her to go on a date," Otis tells Eric as they ride their bikes to school. "I...might do okay at a date. But this hanging out thing has the potential to go horribly wrong."

"Just be cool, Otis," Eric urges him. "Something like this was going to happen eventually. You found someone you like that likes you back. That's already a lot. Can't you be happy with that?"
