(clockwork attacks and debating what to do with Mr Gray)
AFTER LAST NIGHT, WILL'S FEVER HAD GONE DOWN dramatically and he seemed to be in fine spirits. So fine in fact that as Will, Jem, Charlotte and I sat in the drawing room, Will thought it fine to discuss Tessa's brother. Or moreover, the topic of kicking him out.
For you see Nathaniel had been granted a temporary stay in the Institute only until he recovered. We'd all wanted it too be longer as Tessa had only just got her brother back, yet when the Enclave put it to a vote, we were grossly outnumbered.
''This isn't a London Hospital, Tessa's brother shouldn't be here!'' Will cried in earnest. ''He's not a Downworlder, just a stupid, venal mundane who found himself mixed up in something he couldn't manage-''
''Oh Darcie do talk some sense into him,'' Charlotte pleaded. My lips stayed firmly shut, after the truce Will and I had come to in the attic last night I wasn't in any mood to test whether his foul temper still remained.
''He can't be treated by mundane doctor's. Not for what's wrong with him. Be reasonable Will'' Charlotte said swiftly.
''He already knows about the Downworld,'' Jem said thoughtfully. Always calm, logical, Will's voice of reason whilst I was his corrupter. ''In fact, he may know quite a bit of important information- things we haven't gathered yet. Mortmain claimed Nate was working for DeQuincey right?''
Charlotte nodded.
''Thus he might have information about DeQuincey's plans, the automations, how he became the Magister- all of it. DeQuincey wanted him dead, after all. Perhaps it was because he knew too much?''
There was a long silence.
''We can call in Brother Enoch again, then.'' Said Will. ''They can claw through his mind, see what they find. We needn't wait for him to wake up.''
''You know that sort of process is delicate with Mundane's'' Charlotte pressed. ''The Silent Brothers have already stated, Mr Gray's mere fever has driven him to hallucinations. It's impossible for them to sort through they boys mind when it is in a state of delirium. How could we be sure one fact is true and the other a falsehood? Not even knowing whether it could damage his mind permanently.''
''I doubt it was much of a mind to begin with.'' I stated.
''You know nothing about the man,'' Jem spoke sincerely. ''I can't imagine what's driving this foul mood of yours, Darcie, but I more than suspect it has something to do with Will.'' I scowled.
The reason for my crankiness was mere exhaustion, due to last night, I didn't get a chance to rest, and as Will fell asleep in my lap I'd stayed up to watch over him. Monitor his temperature, making sure it didn't spike again. If I caught my eyelids drooping I'd force them blearily back open. Jem had no right to comment on things he had no understanding of.
