There was a ringing. It was consistent and loud. It was hurting my ears. Where was I exactly? What was I doing? Why was I still hearing that ringing?
Achingly, I rolled to my side and knocked my head on the side of my desk chair. "Ow-!" My eyes were fuzzy as I sat up and searched for where my phone was. That was the obvious way to stop that incessant buzzing sound. It had to have been somewhere around where I had slept, right? It wasn't under me, or next to where my head had laid all night.
Then the buzzing stopped.
I let out a tired yawn and let my eyes adjust to the lighting in my room, and finally realised I was sitting on the floor. That would explain why my body hurt all over. Sleeping on the floor surrounded by scrap paper and art supplies was something that I hadn't done often, but I guess it was getting more frequent at this stage. Maybe you needed to set a schedule of some kind for yourself. Letting my eyes graze over the floor, I noticed a book I had been sleeping on by mistake. A one-use pillow was what you could call that thing. The pages creased and were saturated with drool, so it was hard to make out what I had drawn anyway.
"Reki? Are you awake?" My mothers' voice reverberated down the hallway, and I stretched my legs, finally standing up and walking out into the kitchen to see my mother cooking food. She was often doing that, if not cleaning. She wasn't alone though. My grandmother did the same thing. Maybe it was something that my sisters would end up doing as well. I didn't like the idea of some guy ordering my sisters around though, I don't think I would appreciate seeing that in anyone's relationship. Especially my sisters. "I'm awake, what's up?"
As if part of her daily routine, my mother sat my bento box down on the kitchen table, and my brain finally processed what day it was. "Oh shoot! Am I late-?" I turned back on my heel and slammed my body into the wall as I rushed back to my bedroom, rummaging my hand through mess, and finding my phone sitting underneath a pile of doodles that I had probably done sometime last night. Then I tucked my device into my pocket and threw my bag on my back, snatched my skateboard up from where it was at the front door, and spun around to grab my bento from the table.
"By Mom! Love you-" I threw open the front door, ready to rush down the street and catch Langa waiting for me. My brain was ticking so fast, I hadn't had time to process the person standing at the door, causing me to slam into them and knock them to the ground with a soft thud.
"Umph-!" Langa hit the ground and I watched his hair bounce up from his head lightly. My brain lagged by half a second, watching in slow motion as my best friend fell to the ground a second time, this time I took notice of the position he was in right before it happened. His hand was raised politely to knock on the door before I knocked him over. Wait.
Why was Langa here?
"Glad to know you're awake." He smiled at me calmly and I reached out to help Langa stand up again, then watched him brush off any dirt that might have gotten on his shirt. "Well, I am now. Why didn't you call?" I waited until he was ready, and then pushed off on my skateboard with him.
"I did. You didn't answer." Langas' voice vibrated under the asphalt that we rolled over together, and I had to focus to hear what he was saying. "No, you-" I thought back to this morning when my phone was buzzing repeatedly in my dream. Then again while I was awake. It wasn't an alarm at all, instead, it was Langa trying to call me. I guess I really did need to get a schedule for sleep.
Putting that in the back of my mind, we turned another corner and saw the school in view. Usually, we would head to the skate park or somewhere similar before class, but because I woke up late there was a slight change in plans. Besides that, there was also talk about a class trip that everyone was rumouring about. I told Langa the day before, and we agreed to be on time for class today, and even if I messed that up for us, I suppose we could hear from the class rep about this trip.
