chapter nineteen.
SUNGHOON LET OUT A GENTLE EXHALE AS HE LEANED HIS HEAD AGAINST THE COOL MARBLE TABLE, AS HE POKED THE SIDE OF HIS BOBA CUP. All around him, his friends were chatting and catching up with each other, spewing out funny jokes with eyes curved up into crescent moons. His head pounded, and his eyes were glazed over, not being able to think straight. He had just spent his whole night at the carnival with Jake, Hana and Yuna, and yet, it was the dead of midnight sitting amidst a bustling boba cafe.
"Sunghoon. You seem distracted," Sunoo, who was sitting beside him, poked him in the back. Sunghoon let out a yelp before arching his back, sitting straight up with his spine curved. He shot Sunoo a quick glare before slumping against his seat, lolling his head to the side to glance out the window. Sunghoon couldn't help but notice the three pairs of eyes on him, staring right through him as he continued to stare sullenly out the window.
"What?" Sunghoon mumbled after he decided he had had enough of his friends staring at him intensely. He rose an eyebrow as he shifted in his seat, Niki shaking his head solemnly.
"You have not said a single word since you got here, and we can tell something's up." Niki huffed, shaking his head as he stuck his nose high, pouting. The corners of Sunghoon's mouth twitched as he struggled to contain his smile at Niki looking 'upset'.
From beside him, Daniel nodded, adjusting the headphones around his neck. "You're kind of worrying us, you know. You can tell us, anything dude, like. Who are we gonna tell?" Daniel shrugged, taking a sip of his boba drink as Sunghoon looked to the side, seeing Sunoo shaking his head enthusiastically.
Sunghoon snorted, "Guys, I swear, I'm fine. Nothing major happened, I swear." Sunghoon reassured them, beginning to fidget with his boba cup as he chewed on the straw. He let go of the straw and let it sit on his tongue; he really shouldn't be chewing on his straw.
"Okay. . . so what is it? What did you get up to at the carnival? I did see you with Jake, Hana and Yuna~" Sunoo chimed, smiling devilishly as he rocked his body to the side, bumping into Sunghoon, which nearly knocked him into the wall.
"Yo, chill, you idiot," Sunghoon smiled sheepishly as he pushed Sunoo to the side; not too light but not too rough either as he wasn't keen on injuring the younger. Sunghoon let out a sigh that was as gentle as the breeze on a warm, summer day. He leaned his head against the wall to his right, sinking his mind deep into the memories of the Carnival that replayed in his head.
The caky smell of cupcakes wafting out the oven along with the joyous laughs of his fellow group members. Blinking lights and muffled screams in the distance as students, short and tall alike, rode rides high in the sky. And how could he forget about the Ferris wheel, that dreaded Ferris wheel that almost sent him into a state of panic.
"Nothing much, though. We managed the stall for most of the time, and then we walked around," Sunghoon explained, "We played a few carnival games, where I won this super cute puppy stuffed animal, by the way. And then we went on the Ferris wheel." Sunghoon recounted, swirling his brightly coloured strawberry tea around with his bright orange straw. For a brief moment, Sunghoon caught the sight of him sitting in the Ferris wheel, watching as Yuna invited to a time that was meant for the two of them. It was only a brief flashback, bright and clear as day in his mind, but it was too quick to grasp on to it; it slipped right through his fingers.
"Oh, man." Sunghoon ran a hand over his face as he covered his eyes with it. He peeked through his fingers that were resting over his face, realisation hitting his face like a brick.
Oh no.
"Oh no." Sunghoon gasped as he covered his mouth in dread. He shook his head feverishly, beginning to let out a groan as he covered his face with his hands. Sunoo, beside him, quickly became alarmed as he grabbed Sunghoon by the shoulders, sitting him upright.
"Sunghoon? Are you okay? What happened? Is it a migraine?" questions spewed out of his mouth as he immediately began to console his friend. Sunghoon frowned as he uncovered his face, shaking his head.
"Even worse," he whispered, the corners of his mouth spreading downwards. "My date with Yuna is tomorrow!" he exclaimed, putting a hand to his heart.
"Ooh. Get in, Sunghoon," Daniel teased from across the table, Sunghoon shooting him a deadpanned look which caused him to smile cheekily at the older.
"You'll be fine, Sunghoon; you got this," Sunoo said in an attempt to give his friend a boost of confidence. However, Sunghoon sighed out of frustration, remembering his friends didn't know what he was talking about as they couldn't exactly read his mind.
"Yuna ended up inviting Hana and Jake to our date. So now, it's a double date!" Sunghoon clapped his hands together sarcastically, awkwardly crossing them over each other. "Isn't that just fantastic?"
The three boys around the table erupted into a chorus of "oh's" as they all exchanged worried glances. Niki cringed, patting Sunghoon's hand from across the table.
"Have fun with that, buddy. Maybe you could pull a Daniel and pretend you're sick and cancel?" Niki suggested, making a clicking noise with his tongue as he received a blow to his arm from Daniel.
"You're never going to let that down are you?" Daniel mumbled as he rolled his eyes, side-eyeing Niki.
"Never."
"You'd do the same too if you knew a girl was stalking you wherever you went! She put little love letters in my locker and asked me out constantly! I didn't even know her name!"
"So why did you say yes to her in the first place?"
"I felt bad!"
"Woah. Daniel heartbreaker era?" Sunoo piped up with a smirk plastered all over his face. Daniel ended up flipping him off, standing up from his chair and grabbing his boba cup.
"I don't know about you guys, but it's getting pretty late. I think we should all head home before we get murdered by our parents." Daniel huffed, stalking over to a nearby bin.
Sunoo and Niki followed shortly afterwards, walking over to the bin as they threw their empty boba cups in the bin. However, it didn't go without some squabbling from Sunoo and Niki, as Niki 'accidentally' stepped on the back of Sunoo's shoe, Sunoo threatening to hit Niki playfully in his defence. The only one who hadn't left the table was Sunghoon, staring at a spot in the middle of the table, swimming in dread.
I'm screwed.
