chapter twelve.

OUTSIDE THE LIBRARY ENTRANCE, STOOD PARK SUNGHOON. Clad in his school uniform with a pen in his pocket. He found himself fiddling with his fingers outside the library, trying to muster up the courage to walk inside. Usually, he would be okay with these things; hell, he used to walk around the school like he was on top of the world. But now, things are different. He was different now. He was to meet up with Hana, Yuna and Jake in the library to organise their carnival stall for the upcoming school carnival. And so far, he had been standing outside the library for the past ten minutes, fumbling with his fingers.

He didn't know why he was so scared of walking in; maybe it was the fact that he was by himself. He had never felt so confident by himself. He hated being alone even though he seemed a lot more alone than he used to be nowadays. Whenever he walked down the school corridors now, he always felt like he was apart from everyone―different. Only now was he feeling the full ramifications of losing his closest friends, regretting his sheer stubbornness and emotions getting the best of him.

Sunghoon brought his fingers up to fix his hair that was lightly bruising his forehead. He ran his hands through his hair and turned to the wall beside him, where a glass case with many little trophies sitting inside resided. Through the glass case, drilled into the wall, he spotted all the different awards for different sports: Boys Junior Soccer Championship Winners (1988), Girls Senior Soccer Championship Winners (1990), Boys Senior Volleyball Championship Winners (2001); to simple name a few.

There he looked back at himself in the mirror, the tips of his fingers brushing his hair to form a part in his hair, resembling a half crescent moon. He thought he looked more charming with his part like this, more approachable. At least that's what he told himself when he first started middle school, all lost and alone, trying to find some friends to accompany him. Sunghoon internally scoffed at himself, glaring at his reflection in the glass casing. Great Sunghoon. Now you're sad.

However, in the reflection behind him, he could spot movement from the corner of his eyes. He whipped around to see a shorter Jake Sim approaching the taller boy. Although he was wearing his school uniform, Jake looked like he had just run a marathon. Sweat was evident on his face; however, with the sun rays shining softly through a nearby window, Jake looked like he was glowing. The sweat glistened against his face as Jake softly breathed in and out of his mouth. He drew in a deep breath and shot Sunghoon a small wave, moving closer to stand by next to him.

"Hi," he greeted almost breathlessly. He must've noticed the confused look on Sunghoon's face as he let out a small chuckle, pointing to his uniform.

"I just had my sports lesson. Had to change quickly and run― and now I'm here," he explained to Sunghoon in short bursts of sentences, clearly still out of breath from running.
