chapter seventeen.

THE DAY OF THE CARNIVAL. THE DAY SUNGHOON HAS BEEN DREADING THE MOST, BUT ALSO ANTICIPATING THE WHOLE ENTIRE TERM. He knew that spending at least five hours with Jake and Hana would be Hell on Earth itself, yet he found himself buzzing with excitement. He loved the school carnival!

Every year, he marvelled at all the rides the school managed to bring out and all the beautiful stalls put together with students. He loved filling his mouth with sweet cotton candy and going on all the wonderful rides. Flashing neon lights and many glorious prizes to be won at the minigames. He felt like a small, carefree child whenever he roamed around the carnival. And now it was his turn to control the reigns, managing a stall himself.

He was currently working hard in the kitchens, scrambling around to gather ingredients from cupboards here and there, holding teaspoons and tablespoons in his arms, threatening to topple over. Pouring sugar and flour in a bowl, cracking eggs and miserably failing (mind you, he dropped two eggs on the ground that day) while everybody else in the kitchen was doing absolutely nothing to help him.

Sunghoon paused for a moment, thinking about what he was doing. He had just finished pouring all the chocolate cupcake batter into the pan moulds, and it was ready to go into the oven. All they needed was the vanilla cupcakes to be baked, but the batter was nowhere near done as Jake, Hana, and Yuna were putting in zero effort to make it. Sunghoon let out a silent groan of frustration as he wiped his hands on his apron, glancing over at the trio to see what they were up to.

Jake and Hana were currently laughing like they had never laughed before: Jake had a bowl in his arm as he was trying to mix the batter, while Hana was dipping her fingers into the batter and trying to wipe it on Jake's face. Yuna was in the background, presumably organising the decorations for the cupcakes. But not even a second later, she was busy whipping her phone out, snapping pictures of the pair.

Sunghoon grimaced, how sanitary.

"You two are super cute; you know that?" Yuna giggled as she started scrolling through the photos she took, Jake and Hana skipping over immediately.

"We do look pretty good together," Jake nudged Hana's shoulder as he bit down on his lip, leaning over her to look at the photos. She inched her head upwards to look Jake in the eye, giggling at his remarks.

Sunghoon scoffed as he turned away, beginning to preoccupy himself with his bench. Not only were they being incredibly incompetent and being zero help the whole time, but the sight before him was also sickening. Jake seemed to love flirting with everything and anything, more so Hana herself. It made Sunghoon's eyebrow twitch and something inside him itch, feeling the need to punch a wall or scream. He felt so aggravated seeing him around Hana, but Sunghoon was completely fine with Jake when he was around anybody else.

Sunghoon grabbed a cloth as he rinsed it under the water, carefully wiping it over the bench where a patch of flour sat, from Sunghoon making a mess of trying to pour some out. He washed the cloth under some water again as he pulled out a clean bowl from the cupboard. It seemed like the vanilla cupcakes they were making would be no good, so he might as well get started on another batch.

It took a while for him to gather the ingredients; Sunghoon was a bit of a clumsy person, so it took him a lot of effort and concentration to pour the right measurements into the measuring cups and spoons, all while getting it back to his bench in one piece. He immediately started on the recipe, remembering the whole thing since he skimmed through the recipes last night. He could briefly remember them both.

As Sunghoon worked on gently mixing the mixture with a wooden spoon, he flinched hard when he heard a scream break out from behind. He glanced back to see Yuna holding the back of her head as she leaned on the fridge for support, silently laughing while Yuna was wheezing, clutching her phone with two hands. Sunghoon guessed Hana was having a photo shoot of some sort. He turned away, uninterested but was met with a Jake Sim, standing in front of his bench, looking down at the mixture.

"Wow, you made a second batch before we could even finish ours first." Jake chuckled, leaning against the bench. Sunghoon gave him a single glance as he let out a dry chuckle, beginning to stir the mixture once again. He could sense Jake still standing there, watching him, jake eyes boring into his figure.

Dammit, Jake. Watch the batter, not me.

"Hey, Sunghoon?" Jake called out, Sunghoon whipping his head up. Sunghoon hummed, a signal that his attention was on Jake. Jake only smiled brightly, pointing to his cheek.

"You have flour on your cheek," Jake informed Sunghoon, as Sunghoon's eyes widened.

"Oh,"  Sunghoon breathed out as he tried to use his arm to wipe it off, as his hands were dirty. Jake giggled at Sunghoon's flimsy attempts at getting the flour off, to which he sneakily grabbed the wooden spoon from Sunghoon's bowl.

"Don't worry. The flour makes you look professional. It's cute," Jake shamelessly complimented. Sunghoon's head snapped up at that comment, Jake smirking at his reaction. Sunghoon stood there, frozen for a moment as his cheeks were dusted with a light shade of pink.

Then out of nowhere, Jake wiped a tiny smudge of cupcake batter onto the tip of Sunghoon's nose, placing the spoon back into the bowl in one smooth swipe.

Sunghoon felt himself shut down as he tried to process what had happened in the span of the last thirty seconds. He attempted to look down at the cake batter on his nose, then at Jake, who was watching him with a giddy smile on his face. Sunghoon only shook his head and let out a shy laugh, not even worrying about how unhygienic Jake was with the spoon.

He watched as Jake left to go wash his hands, Sunghoon turning back to focus on the cupcake batter. On the outside, he was as calm as the ocean on a clear day. However, on the inside, the ocean waves were crashing against his insides. The butterflies raged inside his stomach; he was giddy, ecstatic even.

However, he pounded down on these feelings, stamping on them to stop. They faded away as soon as they washed over Sunghoon, feeling at ease again.

Feelings like these were never good for Sunghoon. He wasn't sure he wanted to feel these things because, who knows, maybe these feelings would lead him down the path of raging jealousy again.
