chapter ten.
"NOW, THIS BOOK IS A STORY WITH A TRAGIC LOVE STORY― BEGINNING WITH VENGEANCE AND HATE, ENDING WITH SORROW AND HEARTBREAK" Mr Jung spoke stood at the front of the class, holding a small purple-coloured book in his hands. He then sat down on top of his desk, kicking one leg over the other as he smiled gleefully at the obviously bored class. It was the middle of the day, and Mr Jung's class wanted to do everything but listen to him blabber on about literature.
"Albeit a sad story, it's one of my favourites" he let out a light chuckle, bopping his shoulders up as he nodded his head, agreeing with himself.
Sunghoon, who was sitting across the classroom, mentally rolled his eyes and internally groaned. He desperately wanted this class to be over; if there was one thing he hated, it was reading. Sunghoon doesn't know why, but he's never been able to fully enjoy or immerse himself in reading. Maybe it was because he never really found a book that suited his interests, but nonetheless, he still hated it.
Mr Jung was introducing a new topic, and it just had to be focused on reading a book. Knowing Mr Jung, they were probably going to be writing some sort of essay on the book. He definitely wasn't looking forward to it because that just meant the pile of schoolwork he had to complete would grow taller.
Even though Sunghoon had a mountain of homework to complete, he was chilling for the most part. After practically losing his closest friends and being replaced (which was partly his own fault for being so stubborn), he spent the last few weeks focusing on himself and hanging out with his new friends. He grew incredibly close to Sunoo and the others, and he was pretty happy. He managed to rekindle the fire that was lost between the pair, and he was thankful for this opportunity.
He hadn't talked much to Jay and Jungwon these past weeks. Whenever they tried to, Sunghoon always made some sort of excuse to escape. He's been avoiding them at all costs, not caring if it was hurting them and himself. They wanted him gone anyway.
As for Jake, Sunghoon hadn't said a word to him. Not a single one. Every single day, Sunghoon sits down and blatantly ignores the boy. Jake does the same, though, the pair sitting in complete silence unless Hana is talking to Jake, of course. Sunghoon didn't really give a shit, nor did he want to speak to Jake either.
Although his small jealousy problem never seemed to die and he still had feelings for Hana. Even though he wasn't hanging out with Jungwon, Jay and Jake anymore, he never failed to catch himself seeing Jake and Hana strolling around the school together. It killed him, but he forced himself to bite down the feelings and walk away.
"Now, as you can all see, on the front cover of the book is a lavender rose." Mr Jung stated as he pointed his finger at the perfectly embroidered lavender rose on the front. It was a simple purple rose that, with its simplicity, gave the book a minimalistic outlook. Sunghoon thought it looked pretty; a new favourite flower, perhaps?
Sunghoon secretly loved flowers, a guilty pleasure. He loved flowers because they were so beautiful and peaceful. He also loved how each flower had its own little meaning to them, like how each person has their own story to tell. Flowers spoke volumes to him, a small, majestic plant that rustled in the wind with such grace and poise; Sunghoon adored flowers. Not to mention, he has a secret way of determining his favourite flower. It changes pretty often, depending on what he's feeling. The weirdest part is, the thought that a flower is his favourite just comes to him! The idea floats into his mind; he grasps onto the scrolls and unravels them, releasing the secrets contained inside.
Right now, his favourite flowers are red carnations. Red carnations symbolise deep admiration; "my heart aches for you". He thought it was pretty ironic, considering the timing of events.
"Could anyone have a guess on what this could mean?" Mr Jung asked the class, silence filling the room. Shared glances were shared, looks of confusion and some of the recognition, all deciding who would be brave enough to put their hand up and answer the question.
Luckily enough, a girl sitting at the back of the class put her hand up modestly. Sunghoon glanced back and recognised the girl as Ning Yizhou; although everyone called her NingNing.
"That's a lavender rose. If I'm correct, lavender roses are a symbol of enchantment and love at first sight," she answered confidently, My Jung nodding with satisfaction.
"Spot on! Well done!" he clapped his hands together, smiling with glee. He then turned his back on the class and whipped out a whiteboard marker, beginning to draw a small picture on the board, along with a few lines of notes.
Sunghoon watched, his eyes boring into the teacher's back. He dropped his head back, staring at the dry, bleak roof above. He could hear a rustling sound beside him, Jake seemingly shifting in his seat before leaning a little closer towards Sunghoon's direction.
"I think lavender roses are pretty. It has an interesting meaning to it. . . " Jake commented, his voice dipping off at the end. Sunghoon could see Jake in his peripheral vision, tracing small circles on the wooden desk. His hair flopped down onto his face, covering his eyes. Sunghoon was surprised at the small comment from Jake; the boy has said close to nothing to him for the past three weeks.
For a split second, Sunghoon thought Jake was whispering these things to Hana. But as he sat up straight and looked on ahead, he noticed that Hana wasn't facing Jake at all. In fact, she was chatting to Yuna as she examined her nails, not sparing a glance towards Jake. Sunghoon furrowed his eyebrows as he glanced at Jake, Jake side-eyeing Sunghoon.
"What do you think?" Jake whispered out to Sunghoon, his voice so fragile and soft that if you didn't listen hard enough, you'd miss it. It resembled the sparkling dewdrops on a spiderweb or the fluffy white clouds tied to the sky above. Although as pure as his voice was, his gaze was dark and intent. Sunghoon wasn't frightened, morever shocked. Jake manages to surprise him every single day.
"I think they're Uhm. . . pretty. It's symbolic, I guess," Sunghoon muttered, shrugging as he made eye contact with Jake before switching his gaze back to the roof.
"I see," Jake said before he sat up straight, facing towards the front, just in time for the teacher to begin teaching once again.
As the senseless noise of the teacher's voice filled his ears, he sat back in his chair, not being able to shake off a certain feeling that erupted in his stomach. Sunghoon proceeded to then turn towards the window, gazing down at the school oval below.
Jake is. . . weird.
