Stacie grinned proudly when she looked down at her bowl and saw there was none of the funny pasta stuff left. She'd eaten a whole bowl, instead of playing with it and getting it all over herself like her friend. She looked at Cass, sitting there with baby food all over her clothes, her little table, and her face. And then she looked down, and saw that she was wearing almost as much of her own dinner. She hadn't even noticed while she was eating, but maybe keeping her clothes clean was harder than she had thought.
"Good girl," Phil said, and gave Stacie a gentle pat on her head. Any worries in her head quickly faded away again. She knew it didn't matter if she was dirty; as long as Phil said she was a good girl, there was no need to worry about anything else.
"I think we need to get these little ones cleaned up," Mama Nat commented. "How about that, Cassie? Can I wipe the sauce off your face, or will you need a bath?" Stacie didn't see the girl's response, but it must have been clear enough because Mama Nat produced a cloth from somewhere and started to wipe away some of the food from her face. Phil had already started trying to get Stacie clean as well, but she quickly found that she couldn't stop giggling. She knew she was making it harder for him, but his little cloth was tickling her, and she didn't know why it mattered to have her face clean.
Once the grown-ups lifted them down from their high chairs, the two girls stood laughing at each other for a few moments. It seemed so funny to see her friend covered in brown sauce, and Stacie was sure that she looked just as silly. She didn't mind, it just made her feel more like a cute baby girl, and she was already realising how much fun that was.
"You got something in your hair," she said, with a little giggle. "I think I do too."
"Yep!" Cass answered happily, like it was a conclusion she was proud of reaching. "Thilly little babieth can't help making a meth."
Stacie just nodded and kept on laughing. She didn't even know what she was laughing at now, but it didn't matter. Knowing that she couldn't help it made everything better; she didn't even stop smiling when she felt her diaper growing warm again, and realised that she'd just had another little accident. It was just something that happened to little babies, and she was determined that she would be the best baby ever for Phil.
"I'm gonna be the best baby ever!" she said, and speaking the words made her even more confident that it was true. Cass nodded and smiled.
"I'm gonna be littler too! Jutht like Thtacie!"
"You're just as little as me. Maybe we'll both get littler. Do you want to?"
Cass seemed to think for a moment, and Stacie almost forgot what the question had been. These were complex thoughts for such a small child, and she knew that she would be just as happy going off to play with new toys, or with whatever fun things she could find. But there was some part of her that still wanted to hear an answer. She wanted to know if it was okay to be littler, and if that was what her friend wanted too.
"Yeah," Cass giggled, after a long thought. "Leth be babieth together. I think I'm bigger, I can thrill walk all by mythelf. Thath nice."
"I can too," Stacie pouted, but she knew just how hard she was working to keep standing up. It would be easier to just sit down or crawl, but there was still a part of her that wanted to prove she was the bigger girl, just for a moment. She didn't understand the small competitive streak, especially not when nobody was telling her she had to be big, but it took control of her mouth for a moment as she sat on the floor, and she answered without even thinking about what she was saying: "Well, okay. Maybe standing up's hard. We're both good little babies. I got to crawl a bit, and you're a little pottypants."
"I..." Cass gasped, and then her eyes widened in surprise as she recognised the magic word. It was almost like casting a spell, and Stacie decided again that she'd discovered a new favourite thing to do, just like a dozen times earlier in the day. Cass blushed and half squatted, sticking her butt out behind her. Then her face twisted up with extra effort, which looked so silly that it only prompted Stacie to laugh even more.
"I... I..." Cass stammered. "I couldn't help it!"
"Aww, poor baby! Did you make a stinky?"
"That's a little naughty, Stacie," Mama Nat cautioned. "But I think this little one doesn't mind. Do you feel like a little baby now, Cassie?"
"They're both good girls," Phil added, coming up behind Stacie and taking her hand. "I assume Cass told you before about the magic words? So she must have been hoping something like this would happen."
"Maybe we didn't need to be so cautious."
Stacie didn't quite understand what they were talking about. But she could imagine how embarrassed baby Cass might be, to have messed her diaper only seconds after saying she was bigger than Stacie. She was still trying to cover her face with her hands, maybe to hide the blushes, and Stacie thought that was just adorable. She quickly took a step closer and hugged her friend again.
"It's okay," she said. "We're just little babies. Do you wanna play dolls again?"
Cass nodded and smiled, her shame fading away quickly. But around that time, both girls started to notice the smell that was starting to permeate the room. Stacie didn't say anything because she didn't want her friend to feel bad, but Cass reached up to pinch her nose and then giggled.
"I think somebody might need to be cleaned up before you go play again. You should probably have a bath, to get your bottom all nice and clean, okay Cassie? And how about you, Stacie, would you like to help her get clean, and see what kind of bubbles you like best?"
She nodded vigorously, and without another word the two grown-ups took the baby girls' hands. It was bathtime now, and that was sure to include even more fun things for her to discover.
