"Okay, listen up agents. We've been training for two months now and the day we've been preparing for has finally come. Make sure everything's in the right place, make sure you don't make mistakes, otherwise we won't be safe..." Daisy was screaming the last indications for the mission to all the crew and the team. She was extremely nervous. They would've brought him back that day.
Coulson reached her. "Hey, they're all prepared, you don't need to make them more anxious. Just take a deep breath"
"What if we fail?" She asked.
"What if, what if, what if... I don't care about the what-ifs, just stay focused, okay? You promise?" Daisy nodded.
The team was ready. "Wheels up in five".
The plan was to get the Zephyr One in the space and there jump into the future; in that moment they were still in the 80s. In those two months Simmons had improved the Jump Drive and now they were able to set precise coordinates and a precise time. They set the coordinates and added the third dimension coordinate, height, because they needed the bus to be in the space and not on land for two reasons: first the mission had to be done entirely in the sky, and theu had to act when the old Quinjet was already flying; second, no one had to see them, not even the them of the past or they would have thought they were impostors, since they knew nothing about time-travelling.
"This sounds like something impossible" said Sousa, "saving someone who died in the past... sounds controversial, too."
"We are going to do the exact same thing we did with you. We'll save him but they will think he died in the explosion."
"I know, I know. In fact I find what you did with me a bit unethical. I was supposed to die"
"You weren't supposed to die. It's just something that happened. You're telling me you're not happy you didn't die?" replied Daisy.
"Not precisely. I'm just saying that in this way we should save everyone, which is impossible. Why just him and not every other agent who lost his or her life during a mission?"
They both stood silent for a couple of seconds. She didn't know how to answer. And he didn't know what that agent meant to her. But Daisy couldn't tell him the real reason, that would have felt wrong for him. Unethical, as he said.
"Because we know exactly how he died, when he died, and know how to save him without being noticed. Normally agents don't die all alone in the space, and with a monster-parasite with them, to save the world. We have this opportunity and we can't just ignore it. He's an agent like all of the others, but the situation made it possible for us to save him. I believe it's luck, a gift of God"
He nodded silently, even if he knew that that wasn't the complete answer. "Don't you guys have radars to see things like the Zephyr One in the space? How can we not be noticed?"
"Clever question... our technology has developed during all these years and the Zephyr we're on can't be seen by our old radars. There's nothing dangerous about this mission, trust me. I've been planning it since..." Daisy stopped as she realised that what she was saying couldn't be heard by Sousa. But he was very perceptive and understood that there was some other reason why they where on a mission to save Lincoln Campbell. Despite that, he said nothing, not wanting to open a discussion.
The Jump Drive was already set on the right place and time. Everyone in the team felt adrenaline flowing through their veins. Avoiding Hive wasn't that easy. They had to make sure no one was swayed by it before using the Icer. No one could have felt more ready.
The mission began.
They jumped into the future. The Quinjet took off with Jemma, Daisy, Coulson and May on board. Less people meant less probability for Hive to sway the team. They had five minutes before the bomb would have exploded. They had to wait for the old Quinjet with Lincoln and Hive to take off, and then they would have connected their Quinjet with the old one to complete the mission.
There they were.
They could see the old Quinjet from there, but they couldn't see them because of the cloaking.
"We go in, the first thing we do is shot Hive with the Icer; May, you're going to do that. Second, Lincoln will be swayed, so Daisy, you'll inoculate Lincoln with the anti-parasite, hoping he'll be more friendly with you around during the injection. We don't know how he will feel, both for the shock in seeing us and because we don't know the effects of the serum, so Jemma, you'll help him and lead him to our Quinjet. I'll stay in here when you finished to get back to the Zephyr as soon as possible. This might be our quickest mission: just shot Hive and take Lincoln back before the bomb explodes. If Hive resists, if the Icer has no effect, then... improvise".
Everyone was listening to the speech, even the people still on the Zephyr. Yo-Yo would have been of great help in the mission, but unfortunately she was recovering from a bad accident. She was sitting next to Sousa, listening to Coulson.
"This Hive seems to be very... dangerous" he said.
"You have no idea".
They watched as their team approached the Quinjet in the space. Deep silence everywhere on the Zephyr. From there it felt like nothing was happening. But they couldn't have imagined what was really going on there. Not even those who where there could.
