Metal bars, clanging, growling, it was all I knew. Life is cruel, yet the humans make it worse.
Everyday I am left sore from one of their tests, and the next day brings another.
I wanted change, but I didn't know how to get it, none of us did.
I learned early on never to mess with the humans.
That was my life, eat, sleep, test, repeat. Until one day a chain was fastened around my neck.
A human in a long white lab coat led me down a hallway into an enclosure. The ground was no longer hard concrete, but soft plants. There were no bars only fences and walls surrounding me. Lanterns illuminated the space an I stood there in awe of it all.
The man came up to me.
"Unicorn, understand this freedom will be taken away if you don't obey. Children will come to see you and you must be well behaved. If you do this I will allow you to meet with others of your kind. Understand?" He asked me. I nodded my head, so I was a unicorn. "Now you need a name, we can't keep calling you Creature 293. I know we'll call you, Celestia." He decided.
Unhooking the lead he walked out of the enclosure calling to some others to get me a name plate.
This new place was strange, there were two large metal doors at one corner. I walked over to one tapping my horn against it. There was a loud echo and I jumped back. He had said to behave and I didn't want to go back to my cage. This place was strange but I preferred it.
I looked around, the rest of my new enclosure was bare. I sighed, things were going to be the same, except now I realized grass shouldn't be blue.
I don't know how I knew, it was just one of my memories, from before the cages.
I had trouble thinking back to those times. Some nights though, I have dreams about it. Other times something triggers them.
Right now though I was sure it should be green.
I sniffed it cautiously. Nothing bit my muzzle so I relaxed a little. Then I heard a clatter and tensed again.
A man appeared, he wore a hard hat and a tool belt. In his hands was a sign. He put it down and grabbed out a hammer and nails. He then held the sign against the gate and began hammering it in.
The noise was loud and new. I whinnied shrilly and skittered around nervously, the whites of my eyes showing.
I heard shouting as men rushed down a hallway to me. In the lead was the man in the white lab coat. He had a whip in his hand. I reared in fear.
There was a snap and the whip came down on my shoulder. He was agile and had climbed the fence with ease.
The pain made me want to rear again but I knew he wouldn't hesitate the use his whip again. I calmed down, and the man began hammering again. I was startled but this time I just stood there, trying not to shy away.
I stood there until he was finished, the cut from the whip stinging my shoulder.
When he had hammered in the last nail he got up and walked away, into the hallway the men had come from.
I heard my stomach growl and looked at the plants on the ground. Finally I gained the courage to take a bite. It was sweet and fresh on my tongue, nothing like the dry hay I had been fed my whole life.
Over the next few days things were added to my cage. I had a small stream and a blue maple i n the corner a stable was built for me to sleep in and the hay was always fresh.
My days were full of laying around or rolling in the grass, but all good things come to an end.
One day I heard squeals and shouts coming from the hallway that led to my cage. The source of the commotion stepped into the light and I saw them, five small children, two girls and three boys. Following behind was the man who had brought me here
