JINX

Shadow appeared and twisted herself around Jinx's legs, purring loudly to make her presence known. She lowered herself to the ground and sat cross legged, the small cat promptly climbing into her lap as if knowing she needed comfort. She realised that the little cat must have realised what was happening that morning and tried to tell them before everything had gotten to the state it had been in when they'd finally been alerted by a child from that cell block. She looked down at the black cat in surprise and held her closer, proud of the little creature and annoyed with herself for getting distracted and not taking the warning so seriously.

She looked up and saw Daryl walking out of the building, she held a hand up as he glanced in her direction and he headed over toward her. He nodded towards her as she pushed herself up to her feet. "Gonna bury the dead ones." He told her, looking towards his feet.

She looked up at him and saw the sadness in his eyes, she stepped forward and wrapped her arms around him. He stiffened in surprise for a second, she wasn't usually this affectionate in public, but quickly relaxed and wrapped his own arms around her, resting his chin on the top of her head as they took comfort in each other. After a long minute, she pulled away enough to look up at him without letting go, "You okay?" she asked gently.

"Gotta be." He told her with a shrug, and she hugged him tighter again.

Jinx had gone to grab gloves and something she could use as a mask to help Daryl dig the graves, but as she started towards where he and Rick were out in the field she heard Maggie screaming their names and turned to her direction instead. The walkers were piling up against the fence and it was bending inwards. She took off at a run, grabbing one of the metal poles they kept nearby for taking out the walkers as she passed.

"The noise drew 'em out and now this part's starting to give!" Maggie called out as she, Rick and Daryl all caught up at roughly the same time. Sasha, Tyreese and Glenn joined them and they all began frantically stabbing walkers through the wire mesh.

"Are you seeing this?" Sasha called out to them as she moved slightly farther down the fence. "Is someone feeding these things?" they all paused to look at the ground by her feet where there was a small collection of half-eaten rats.

The pause was enough for the walkers to build up again and Daryl pulled their attention back with a yell as the fence began to buckle. It didn't matter how fast they tried to kill the walkers, the fence was going to give, and Glenn called that out as they pushed against it.

"Everybody back, come on back now!" Daryl called out jumping back, it was too much of a risk for them to be pressed up as close to the fence as the dead were.

"If the fence keeps bending in like that, those walkers are coming over it." Sasha pointed out as they all stood back for a second looking at it. Rick looked back towards his farm and Jinx followed his gaze, instantly in tune with his plan. They needed to get rid of the pigs, they were too much of a risk for spreading the virus, they needed to spread the walkers out to take the pressure off the fence. Two birds, one stone.

"Daryl, get the truck. I know what to do." Rick instructed him and Daryl nodded. Jinx went back to stabbing walkers through the fence with Sasha and Glenn while Tyreese and Maggie helped with the gate.

She watched as Daryl and Rick pulled the truck around into the field and Rick cut the first pig, she tried and failed not to wince at the sound of its squeals and turned away, unable to watch the animals be slaughtered. It was easier for her to look into the rotting faces of the dead than see animals harmed, even if she knew it was necessary.
