—Ashton—
It was always going to be difficult. You’d never been able to hear anything - it made school difficult, you couldn’t speak and you couldn’t interact with anyone.
So when this drummer boy comes up to you and start talking. You can’t do anything but panic and walk away with what you hope is an apologetic expression on your face.
That night, your family friend Calum is texting you and it takes a strange turn all of a sudden.
'Did you see Ashton today?' He’d asked.
'Who's Ashton?'
'The drummer in the year above us? He just joined our band'
'Oh,he didn't know I couldn't hear'
'Did he not? He told us he thought you were cute'
'Really? Why?'
'Because you are cute'
'You can give him my number if you like…’ This was the most confident I’d ever been in my life.
‘Can I come over?’ He asked. I replied yes and moved a few clothes under my bed in preparation.Since we’d grown up together,Calum had grown up learning sign language and had to look after me and protect me a lot at school. His family fought with mine for the local high school to cater for my needs, otherwise my whole family would have had to relocate across the city to a special needs school which wouldn’t have been fair on my brother or sister.
When he arrived,we sat cross legged opposite each other on my bed and he looked me dead in the eyes, speaking the words as he signed them too me.
“Ashton is a good guy.”
“But?” I replied.
“I don’t want him hurting you.”
“I won’t let him.You won’t let him.”
“I know.Just… Don’t meet up alone at first.”
“Why? This was your idea.”
“And I’m regretting that. You’re too special for me to let him hurt you.”
I smiled at him and blushed a little. “Thank you.Okay.”
The next day at school I went over to Ashton by his locker with an already prepared note in hand.
‘Sorry about yesterday, didn’t know who you were.Talked to Calum – I think you’re cute too. I’m deaf, sorry if I seemed rude xx’
Instead of nodding and over exaggeratedly mouthing thank you, Ashton dropped his bag and scrabbled for a pen, using his locker as a table to scribble his reply.
‘I’m so sorry,I didn’t know! It wasn’t rude at all - I shouldn’t have been so arrogant. LI think you’re beautiful x’
Whilst I was reading he grabbed my hand and smiled at me, flashing those gorgeous dimples in my direction. He took the paper back off me and wrote something else.
‘Do you want to go for a coffee sometime? My aunt runs a café – best chocolate cake in the world x’
I looked up at him excitedly, unable to mask the smile and nodded. He smiled back, saying ‘I’ve got to go’, pointing behind him and waving at me as he left.
He was right. The chocolate cake was amazing.
