"There must be some misunderstanding." Nick told the receptionist."No. It's not a misunderstanding, someone isn't doing their job properly. " I spoke out a bit loudly that the other guests turned in our direction.
"Does anybody do their research before receiving important business clients? I guess not, because if you did we wouldn't be having this problem huh?!"
I was beyond pissed at this point. It was cold and I was still fatigued from last night. I didn't need this.
I watched the receptionist's face twist in confusion, she looked like she wanted to speak but someone else beat her to it.
"Is there a problem here? Marcy?" An older woman which I guessed was the manager joined us.
"Yes, there is a big problem actually. Someone here isn't doing their job and I would know cause my step-son here runs a chain of hotels and restaurants."
Nick had been quiet up to this point. The manager looked between Nick and I and back again before whispering something in the receptionist's ear. I watched quietly as the young woman typed something quickly on her computer and her face pale.
"I'm sorry for the misunderstanding, I'm sure you would understand why it was so easy to make such a mistake." The manager said looking between me and Nick with a scrutinizing expression.
I narrowed my eyes at her but she didn't seem phased. I was about to say something very unprofessional but Nick beat me to it.
"Can you fix the problem then? We are both tired and would like to retire to our suites." He calmly stated to the manager.
"Unfortunately, we are fully booked tonight. We can perhaps send our staff to create a makeshift bed and get you into another suite when other guests check out tomorrow." Her voice was anything but unapologetic, God knows I would fire her if she was managing any of our hotels.
"Perhaps we need to find another hotel." I challenged her.
"You could but all our neighbouring hotels are full. And there is no driving in this storm Mrs Daniels."
"The odds seem better than being subjected to this incompetency. God knows what else is going to go wrong under your management. Maybe we should just call your boss huh?" I was bluffing but the look on her face was priceless.
"Katherine." Nick spoke in a low but stern tone. My body reacted to the unspoken command and my mouth immediately shut. So much for being the parent here.
"We'll take it but we don't expect such incompetency from you and I'm sure your bosses don't either." The threat was clear in his voice, he did it so much better than me.
"I apologise for the inconvenience again sir." Looks like it had finally sunk in that her job was on the line. I threw the manager one nasty look before making my way to the elevator with Nick only a few steps behind.
We shifted into silence the moment the elevator doors closed. I hate that I had gotten myself all worked up over such a silly detail. Any other person would have reacted better, they would have laughed at the error and would've happily shared the suite with their son. But I wasn't any other person and Nick and I were not in any ordinary situation.
If I was being completely honest, I was more embarrassed than angry. Embarrassed to be mistaken as my stepson's wife when I was his mother. I internally cringed at that thought.
The doors dinged opened and I found myself glued to my spot. My palms were sweaty even though it was cold outside. I hated myself for being nervous for no reason, where was the strong ambitious woman I've always been?
"Coming?"
My eyes snapped to Nick, he had his foot stuck out to stop the elevator doors from closing.
"Yeah." I forced myself to walk out.
The suite was breathtaking, you could see the amazing view of the Eiffel Tower from the dining room balcony. There were a few french paintings on the way, I never did History so I didn't know much other than what people told me about the French revolution. I had been to many luxurious hotels during my time as Craig's assistant but after we got he preferred to stay in fancy cabins his friends owned.
I stood awkwardly in front of the balcony whilst Nick handled our luggage with the hotel staff. I didn't even want to think of our sleeping arrangement at this point. I wonder what Craig would think if he knew his wife and son were sharing a hotel suite together and that it wasn't the first time too. The scandal Nick and I's situation would cause, I didn't even want to think of the damage it would do to the company.
"Do you want to eat first or discuss the sleeping arrangement?" Nick spoke from behind me.
"There is nothing to discuss...I will take these beautiful sofas."
I heard him give a small deep laugh. He rarely laughed and it made me turn to face him, he had a funny look on his face
"On top of all that temper, you are ridiculous too."
"Well? You want to take the sofas instead, they look pretty comfortable. " I asked.
"It's a king-size bed. Both of us can fit." He said nonchalantly like it was the most normal thing in the world.
"Are you crazy? Do you realise how inappropriate that would be?" I hissed at him.
"It won't be the first time." He mocked.
"Oh God, you can't be serious. If it even gets out to the world that you and I..." The words died in my throat, I couldn't even say it.
"That you and I what?" He asked taking a step closer to me.
"That we had mind-blowing sex in a hotel suite two years ago."
Another step.
I swallowed hard.
"Or maybe that the memory of it still lingers fresh in our minds each time we are in the same room together."
Another step. Now we stood face to face, we weren't touching but the air felt so intimate. It was hard to keep my thoughts straight with his very scent all in my nostrils, getting to my head.
"You're engaged and I'm married to your father. Dwelling on the past is only going create trouble for us. I suggest you forget about it cause I surely have."
The lie came out more smoothly than I expected.
"Then you won't have a problem sharing the bed with me."
It was a challenge and I knew better than to accept it but damn I wanted to prove my point so badly.
"Fine."
