CHAPTER NINE

The Daniels & Dawson enterprises was in the heart of New York, a large concrete building twenty storeys high in the sky. I hadn't been here in two weeks because the executive floor was being reconstructed and yes despite just being some supervisor i worked in on the top floor with all the successful people because after all i was the CEO'S wife. I parked my car in a reserved spot next to a shiny black Aston Martin which i had no doubt belonged to the prodigal son. Ofcourse he had beat me in arriving here, i had taken a detour to the small cafe i used work at. Despite all the money Alex was bringing in for her family, her Nana insisted on keeping it and we were regular visitors there. I grabbed the box of doughnuts Nana Lopez had packed for me and exited the car, i knew i was already late but it wasn't my fault. I sighed as i entered the building, from now on nothing was going to be the same.

An eerie silence blanketed the room as i walked by the reception on my way to the elevator, i guessed that everyone knew i was a shareholder now which in their eyes was as good as being a boss. I wasn't one to instill fear in the people that worked for me but during my rise to the top these people hadn't exactly been the friendliest and now that i was close to the top they feared for their jobs. Good they should have. They all stood looking at me with wide eyes, it was a bit comical but what really got me chuckling was Julia's deathly glare, if looks could kill.

Julia was the company's receptionist and had been working there for 10 years now, she knew every detail about every single employee and was the biggest gossip in town. She was older than me, a tall skinny woman with a dirty blonde pixie cut and small grey eyes that hid behind her blue eye contacts. Ever since i stepped into this company, Julia had made it her mission to turn everyone against me and have me fired but that didn't work out so well for her. After Craig and I's engagement she had spread a countless rumours about me and lets just say she had won over many employees to her side and i was labelled the bad guy, not that i really minded. I stepped into the private elevator and threw her a small grin just before the doors shut, I loved watching them all squirm especially Julia. I wasn't a petty person and despite her little vendetta against me i wasn't going to fire her, i doubt there was anyone better at their job than Julia and she definitely was a great asset to the company, we needed more people like her but i was definitely going to make her lose that attitude.

As soon as the elevator doors opened i stepped out, a few ordinary employees were running around the place, i knew that all the executives were already in the board meeting welcoming the new CEO of the company. I glanced over at Suzanne's desk where she was busy doing whatever overpaid secretaries nowadays days did, she was hired as Craig's secretary after Alex left and she was also on the "Hate the boss's wife" club which was funny because she didn't even know me. I was about to walk by when i noticed a small girl or woman or whatever she was mumbling to herself as she scurried in my direction. She was a short little thing probably between the age of 19 and 21, she had long auburn hair tucked away in a big messy bun, in a short pencil skirt and floral blouse with some flat shoes, she moved closer to me. Her facial features were kind, she was probably a naive little girl thrown in a big bad world, she looked up at me with large green eyes blinking hard as if she was seeing a ghost. I raised my eyebrow in question which broke her not so calm trance.

"Good morning, Mrs. Daniels. I am Penelope Rivers, your new assistant. Right now you are late for a board meeting but don't fret i already took down some of the notes for you before i was alerted of your arrival. The rest of your schedule includes picking out a few things for your new office, i have already contacted some of your favourite interior designers and they will start flocking in after lunch." She finished her rambling by taking the box in my hand and handing me some of the notes she had talked about. I wasn't one to be easily impressed but this girl knew what she was doing, i already liked her and she was new which was a good thing, her mind wasn't corrupted by the likes of Julia and Suzanne yet. I ran my eyes over the notes and began making my to the board room with my new assistant trailing behind me like a good girl.

When i got to the boardroom, congratulations where already in place for Nick, dozens of people where crowded around him, making it hard to see him which i was thankful for, i have had had enough of his face to last me a lifetime. "Katherine, join us." Craig beckoned me to join him where he was standing with a couple of our colleagues. "Did you like your present?" He asked me with a wide smile on his face, he knew i wanted more but still couldn't deliver and here i was forced to act as if i was satisfied. "It was very thoughtful of you my love, i will not disappoint." I told him brushing my lips on his cheek. "I have one more surprise though, am not going to be here when you see it cause a few people and i are going to be driving to the construction site of our new hotel but am sure your new assistant will go through everything with you. Plus Nick is here, you will have everything you need." My husband told me as he called Penny, my assistant to show me my new office.

I glanced at the renovations that had been done on this floor and they were impressive as expected. Offices had been extended and whole floor was made of a greyish marble, there was no doubt that security had been tightened and not just anyone would be allowed up here. We reached Craig's office and his door had been replaced by two mahogany double doors, the whole design was a bit funny really, i didn't see the need to have the double  doors for one office. I rolled my eyes at how over the top my step son was being, he wasn't the freaking president of the world. Penelope pulled the doors open and beckoned me to follow her inside, nothing much had changed from the last time i was here, just a few of my husband's things had been removed. I glanced around silently still trying  to figure out what i was doing here, i was about to voice out my curiosity to Penny who stood beside me when i turned around and almost choked on air.

My assistant stood there nervously, fiddling with her fingers as she looked at everywhere except me. I walked two steps towards the new glass wall that was in the room, a glass door was there as well, providing entrance into the next office. I had no illusions about  the office that i was looking at, i had already taken note of some of my belongings on the table, the office was gorgeous just as the one i was standing in but my question was why?. Why was there this glass wall between my office and Nick's ? I couldn't find my voice, why was Craig doing this? This was the same as sharing an office with his son, wheels in my head were turning, thinking of all the things that would disadvantage  me, just when i thought my life could not get any worse, Craig pulls this on me. I couldn't enter or leave my office without encountering Nick, he would be everywhere and i would not have any sort of privacy as long as i worked here. In that second it clicked in my head, my husband didn't trust me,especially with the new influence  i had gained, he needed someone to keep an eye on me at all times and who better to do that job than the CEO himself. I was hurt by his level of distrust, i swallowed a lump in my throat and pulled myself back together, this was only going to distract me but it wouldn't stop me from my initial goal. I would run Nick out if this company, if its last thing i did.

"I see Penelope has already broken the good news to you about our situation". I froze when i heard that one voice that could mess around with my body's reaction. I could hear the mockery in that gorgeous velvety voice, he knew about this, better yet he might have suggested it. I turned from the view of my new office to face  the devil himself that was leaning against his desk, watching me, his blue eyes filled with amusement and a slight grin on his lips. He looked incredibly handsome right now, delicious too but that wasn't the point at the moment. "Well, our situation gives me a front row seat to see whatever this is crush and burn. So don't be so quick to smile, this just makes things a whole lot more interesting." It was a lie, there wasn't anything interesting about this but i wasn't going give it away. I glanced at him one last time before walking out.

Interesting turn of events but am sure we all know now not to mess with Kate.
