Chapter 11
I awoke again from another restless night's sleep. I had gone out with Ethan again last night and come home exhausted. We spent the night at a local fair. My main reason for agreeing to the night out, though, hadn't been a desire to spend more time with Ethan; truthfully, the man's ego and opinion of himself was starting to get to me. He seemed to think he was god's gift to women, and the constant attempts to get into my pants were getting unbearable.
When he dropped me home last night, I thought I was in for another awkward five minutes fondle until I could find an excuse to get him to leave, but luckily the constant companion I had for the last few days the lion I had now nicknamed "King" was sitting on my porch when we drove up.
Thinking about it, Ethan's reaction had been a little off, not the normal shock and then concern that had been coming my way the last few days whenever someone encountered me and 'King.'
Take Brax, for example; he had been shocked when he came back from his trip and walked in to find Myself and king lying on my bed. I had been looking through the catalog for the upcoming wildlife auction, and King was lying across my feet, alternating between swatting my toes with his paws and intently studying me with his deep brown, almost black eyes.
Brax had walked straight through my door, not bothering to knock, and had stopped dead at the sight of a full-grown male lion on the bed; King of cause sensing a threat had leapt off with bed with a startled roar and proceeded to stalk Brax across the room.
Id moved quickly, not wanting my friend to be mauled. Then, holding my hand out to Brax, indicating for him to stay perfectly still, I moved to King and placed my hand on the lion's head. I'd never seen him this angry before when he's come close to the other workers before he had treated them with a kind of indifference, acting a little protective if they raised their voice or tried to touch me, but all Brax had done was enter the room.
I knelt next to the king and ran my hand over his mane "it's ok, king he's a friend; he means no harm it's alright," soothing him as he was an upset child it took a couple of minutes but eventually the hackles which had risen on his neck and the switching of his tail ceased and it was safe for me to stand.
I stayed with my hand on the head of the now sitting lion "hello Brax, I wasn't expecting you till tomorrow. I smirked at the amazed and slightly terrified look on his face. Finally, after his eyes darted between me and king a couple of dozen times, he spoke, " So Jace, I see you've made a friend."
I nodded, not impressed by his condescending tone; what had passed between myself and king in the last few days was more than just a mere friendship to be scoffed at by him I'd never felt so completely at home or as comfortable in my own skin as I did when I was with my lion and id be damned if Brax was going to make fun of me for that.
"Brax King King Brax" I introduced; Brax just looked amused that I was introducing him to a wild animal, and King gave some sort of grunt. We had all taken a seat on the couch then, and Brax had detailed his trip back to the states and filled me in on all the gossip. Through the entire conversation, King had sat at my feet, seeming to be soaking in the conversation and keeping a watchful eye on Brax.
Ethan, Though had been entirely different the moment his eyes had spotted king. He stiffened and seemed to be more angry than afraid he didn't even seem to consider for a moment that it was strange to see a lion on my doorstep or that I wasn't afraid of his presence, I had turned to him to explain the situation but the anger and hostility I saw in his eyes had stopped the words in my throat. "See you at the auction tomorrow 'he had ground out past tightly clenched teeth.
