The sun is high in the afternoon sky. There isn't a cloud in sight. Truly, the perfect weather for planting new crops with your enderman companion. You hadn't asked him to help, but when he saw you leave for the field in the morning he was naturally curious. Having never tended to a farm of his own he was fascinated with the process. Of course, you offered him a wooden hoe to till the ground with after you caught him admiring it.

And so you worked together to plant everything from wheat, to carrots to pumpkins, and berries. Looking over all your hard work, you notice the enderman seems a bit disappointed the little plants haven't immediately yielded a harvest. "Hey, watch this!" You call his attention to an old skeleton bone.

He tilts his head to the side in confusion as you extract the marrow. Usually you'd save these, but you could spare a couple. You apply bone marrow to some wheat and in almost no time it matures to harvest. The enderman looks on, clapping his hands together in a small round of applause for your work. "I could make us some bread and we could have a picnic!"

Then enderman nods his head and then vanishes. A week ago you would have feared you scared him off. Now you knew he simply wanted to get something. You use the freshly acquired grain to make two loaves of bread while he's gone. A few minutes later he returns with a light blue blanket from your house, and a couple torches to fend off any unwelcome guests. He lays the blanket out and you bring two warm loaves of bread over and sit down on the soft blanket.

You slice the bread and ladle some honey you collected from a beehive last month on top of it. You're pleasently surprised at how long it's held up. You take a mental note to collect some milk from your cows next time to go with it. The snack is absolutely delicious, and sharing it with a friend makes it even better. As you finish off your last bite, you feel a sudden weight on your shoulder and realize the enderman has dozed off and leaned his head on your shoulder. His chest slowly rises and falls in tandem with the swaying flowers in the meadow.

You decide now is as good a time as any to close your eyes as well. Rather than sleep you hum a familiar tune. The low notes rumble in your chest and the high notes float through the air and mingle with the breeze. As you reach the end of your song and start another, you hear a faint scribble, like a quill on parchment. You open your eyes to see the enderman awake again and drawing in the notebook you gave him. You continue humming as he seems to enjoy the sound and watch him as he sketches an unfamiliar scene.

He draws a place so unusual you might even consider it in another world, or realm. Not even the strangest marshes or mushroom lands look like his art. "Ender, what is that?" The nickname slips out before you even realize it.

He makes a happy sound at the new title then circles one specific plant in the picture. A small herb that looks like it could be useful in potions. And that's when it hits you, of course he wasn't drawing anything from the overworld. He's drawing a nether biome! You're a bit ashamed to admit you've done very little exploring in the nether. You only visit to trade or collect potion supplies, and those trips are short. They generally end with frantically jumping into your portal as an angry ghast shoots fireballs at you for looking at it funny.

"Do you want to get that herb?" I ask and he nods enthusiastically. It must be important to him. "Can you draw what it does or what you can do with it?"

Ender quickly flips the page and sets about sketching something new. The first thing you recognize is an enderman, most likely himself. Then on the other side of the page he draws you, only needing to glance over for a reference a couple times. Next he draws the plant between you two as well as some other more common potion ingredients. To his side of the drawing he draws jagged lines to represent him talking. An arrow through the potion, and then wavy talking lines on your half.

"Wait... is this a translation potion?" You ask, looking over the drawing a few more times to evaluate the meanings behind it. Ender nods and closes the book. After carefully setting it aside he pulls you into a hug. "That would be amazing! I can make plans to retrieve the supplies as soon as possible!"

Ender squeezes you tight before letting go. He shakes his head disapprovingly at your last statement and now it's your turn to give a silent head tilt of confusion. He rolls his eyes, but there's no hostility behind it. Then he gently taps your injured leg and gives you a knowing look.

"I know I'm not in peak condition, but I was able to run and fight during the storm!" You remind him and he nods, hearing your point and thanking you again for your help. However, it's obvious he still thinks you shouldn't brave the nether yet.

He raises a hand and holds up five fingers. Five days until you should go. Five days to stock up on supplies, heal, and train. That's fair. "Alright, I'll be patient, but only because I'd hate for you to worry,"

Ender smiles, and grabs your hand giving it a little squeeze, wordlessly telling you thank you. A translation potion will be lovely, but even without it you know the value of what you have. You lean forward slowly, giving Ender plenty of time to react before you kiss his cheek. When you pull back with a blush you discover that enderman can, in fact, blush just as brightly as a human can.

A/n: I have the ending of the story planned out, so there's either going to be one or two more chapters left! I hope you're enjoying it so far!
