My french teacher once asked me: What's the difference between "j'aime" and "j'adore"?
J'aime: Roughly translated as "I like or I love"
J'adore: Roughly translated as "I love" but with obsession
She said that when you love something or someone, you love them but you are still impartial and you know the difference between right and wrong. You can tell them how proud of them you are, but where did they make mistakes, their qualities, but also their weaknesses.
On the other hand, "adorer" or loving someone with extreme obsession makes you blind. Blind to all their defaults, their wrongs, their mistakes... It's loving someone without even questioning their behavior.
She did mention "The little Prince" and said that if you love a rose, you water her and take care of her each day. If you're obsessed with it, you will pluck it.
In french: "Si tu aime la rose, tu l'arrose et prends soins d'elle chaque jour. Mais si tu adore la rose, tu vas la cuellir.
