Chapter One

Amber's POV

"Come now, Amber, we must keep together!"

My father, Jean, took my hand as we walked through the crowded town square, dodging many people as we went. I couldn't step one step behind him without being pulled back against his side. My father, he was very protective over me. This was all because my mother had died when I was just a very young girl. But even now as a young woman, I was still extremely protected. In some ways, I rather liked the protection. There was only one thing I didn't like: I hadn't had any connection with a man, not a romance, anyway. No men caught my eye. None of them. I began to feel like there was no man for me in the whole of Paris...

Marius' POV

Revolution. That's all us students were talking about. Revolution this, revolution that...

I wandered through the crowded town square after a massive gathering in the street, which didn't go down as well as I'd thought. My father told me I'd ashamed the family, just for standing up for what I believed in... Especially coming from a rich family, I guess it'd affected them a lot more than I realised. I had to pretend to be poor, but if it helped to get what we wanted, then I'd do anything!

It was very busy. The sounds of Parisians talking and horses hooves really got to my head sometimes. It was so hard to see around it was that busy. Suddenly, I stopped. Staring. I looked over at the other side of the town square, well what I could see of it, and stared. I caught the glance of a young girl. Dark, brown hair falling past her shoulders and deep brown eyes gazing back at me. I stood in awe at her beauty; I'd never seen such a beautiful girl before. My heart pounded in my chest. She looked away, but quickly looked back again. I dodged my way through the crowd, trying to move closer to her, not taking my eyes off her for a second. I felt like my whole world had been turned upside down. For the first time, I felt like I'd actually fallen in love with someone...
