"Bro, did they call you? Did you hear? Are you going?" Yoongi yells at us over the phone.
Mr. and Mrs. Kim have been the perfect couple since forever. Mrs. Kim never liked me but that never stopped me from admiring her and her relationship with her husband and kids, including Yoongi. However, since Mr. Kim retired and passed his company down to Namjoon, their relationship hasn't been a smooth one. Namjoon and Yoongi often told me about their father calling them in the middle of the night because of some fight that their parents had. Yoongi despised this behavior because he was always afraid that Mr. and Mrs. Kim would too, like his biological parents, run out on each other and leave them to a broken home. I have known them for a long time and never did I ever think that this day would come. The day when I'd have to see Mr. Kim and his wife part ways. From what I heard, the four siblings, Namjoon, Seokjin, Taehyung, and Yoongi have been summoned to their family home in the countryside, along with me.
"Yes of course I heard. Dad asked me to bring Maya as well so we are heading towards her house right now, we'll pack some essentials that she needs and off we go." Namjoon straight away answers.
We first go to my house, pack my stuff, then go to Namjoon's, pack his stuff and head out. It was a six-hour-long drive because of which we had to stop by a drive-thru to buy ourselves dinner and late-night snacks. The car was filled with silence almost the whole time. The only sounds that could be heard were of the cars passing by us at full speed. I glanced at my watch only to see that it was some minutes past four in the morning. This meant we still had three more hours of road time left before reaching our destination. I tried to stay awake as much as possible for Namjoon, knowing it would be difficult for him to drive with a person sleeping like a log beside him. Along with that, he has a lot going on in his mind right now.
"What are you thinking?" I break the silence that had engulfed the car.
"Where it went wrong. I never thought my parents would come to a point where they'd want to get rid of each other. I know they've been having fights over the pettiest of things but I never thought that they'd decide on divorcing each other." Namjoon says. His voice has a tone of sadness to it.
"I think it's something different and clearly not something worth breaking their marriage over."
"What do you mean?" Namjoon asks.
"I have been hearing about the problems that your parents have been having ever since Mr. Kim retired. It can be a possibility that they are getting tired of the same environment around them. They weren't used to being with each other almost every second of every day and being confined in the same place for the last three years with no social interaction apart from the family gatherings that you all have twice every year. I feel they are tired of being lonely together and are expressing this loneliness and boredom and mental imprisonment as anger towards each other."
"Okay, can you say these exact words to them when we go there and discuss things?" Namjoon practically begs me with his eyes.
"Namjoon, no matter how much you guys think of me as family, it's not really my place to say these to them. You, however, can explain this to them in a calm, composed, and proper manner." I say.
I feel so bad right now for him that I can't even put it into words.
"Yeah provided I stay calm and composed," Namjoon says as I see him clenching his jaw and tightening his grip on the steering wheel.
"No see no you can't do that. You can't lash out at them. No matter what you are feeling, they are feeling worse. Keep that in mind." I say, trying to calm him down.
"Yeah sure. They feel so bad and so shitty right now that they decide to break their marriage of forty years."
"Exactly Namjoon. They have been together for the last forty years and they are on the verge of breaking that bond. You might lose them as a couple, but they will very well be present in your life as your parents. They, however, will hardly stay in each other's lives, after forty years of being together. Think about it from their perspective too. They are internally devasted probably. This is why we all were called and asked to come, probably so that they are reminded of the beautiful family that they have and cherished for so long so that they are reminded that they indeed have something worth fighting for. You are one of the most intelligent people I have ever come across but honestly, you are very dumb when it comes to emotions and relationships and feelings and shit."
"Since when did you turn into such an intellectual romantic?" Namjoon asks, chuckling a bit. It melts my heart seeing him smile.
"Well, I have been one since childhood, thank you for noticing it now," I say as I stifle a yawn.
"Go to sleep. You have been yawning a lot since the past one hour."
"But you are driving, how can I fall asleep with you driving next to me?" I ask.
"If it's too uncomfortable for me then I'll wake you up," Namjoon says, smiling at me.
"Okay fine. Good night." I fall asleep almost instantly.
After what felt like an eternity, I wake up from my sleep, only to see the sun is about to rise.
"Woah woah why did you wake up?" Namjoon asks, his eyes locked at the road in front of us.
"How long did I sleep? Felt like an eternity to me."
Namjoon laughs slightly yet again before shaking his head, "Forty-five minutes. You slept for forty-five minutes. Go back to sleep, we still have a little over two hours left."
"I can't fall asleep now. You could use some sleep though, you've had a long day and you look really tired." I say. It looks as if his face shrunk.
"Well then dumbass if I sleep then who will drive?"
"Well dumbass, did you forget that I have been driving longer than you? Of course, I'll drive. Now stop the car and switch places."
Namjoon eagerly stops the car and switches places with me, now getting comfortable in the passenger seat. After a minute or two, I see Namjoon drift off to dreamland. He really needs to rest a bit, to prepare himself for what is about to come. I sincerely hope that it isn't really fucked up and that what I said was right. As I see the sunrise, I open the windows, breathing in the fresh air of the countryside. I was tempted to wake him up to see the sunrise but I let it go. I'd rather let him have his much-needed sleep than gawk at the beautiful sunrise. It was too beautiful, with the sun rising from in between the mountains, the sky turning pink and then orange, the rays first falling on the tree-covered mountains. It looked like a painting.
I drive for the remaining two hours admiring the beauty of the countryside. It has been so long since I have been here. The cold and crisp air hit my nose as I let my hair open and let the wind play with my waist-long hair. I spot a house at a distance on the top of a hill and immediately recognize it. It is the place where shit will go down today. I drive, mentally preparing myself too, for the chaos that is about to take place in a matter of a few minutes.
Upon reaching the desired location, I wake Namjoon up.
"We are there already? I wished that we took a wrong route and had to make a detour so that we reached a lot later than anticipated." He looks down, trying to be as strong as possible.
"It will be fine. You are here, your brothers are here, we'll all talk some sense into your parents. Now come on." I say as I turn the ignition off and get out of the car, followed by Namjoon jumping off as well. We collect our bags from the trunk and lock the car before heading towards their country house.
"Are you ready to do this? You know mom isn't really fond of you, I still don't know why, and you'll have to face her. I know she has been nothing but civil when around you but I can't promise that today." Namjoon asks, looking at me all worried right before grabbing my hand and interlocking our fingers. I give his hand a tight squeeze before nodding and ultimately knocking on the door.
"Brace yourself, Maya. I have a feeling shit is going to get ugly as fuck today in this household."
