Mr. Wilton was taken into the emergency ward and it seemed that it was nothing serious but due to increased blood pressure which resulted in difficult pumping of blood by his heart and he fainted. For observant, he was moved to another room for taking all types of tests for future reference.
After quite about an hour, a nurse came towards Eva, who was feeding her fish in her cabin, and handed her the test reports. Eva got them in her hands before giving a small nod.
Eva looked at the file in her hands. She turned over the pages and took a clear note of the symptoms. The more she looked at it, the faster her hands started shaking. She could sense something that seemed odd. With fastened breaths, her feet involuntarily moved backward until her back hit something hard. The wall wasn't rigid like a brick and so Eva checked back towards the source of impact to see Riaz standing calmly. He walked past her and sat on the couch at the side.
"You are interested in fish, huh?" he said with eyes fixed to the two golden fish in the cuboidal tank. Eva just hummed cause she was not in the mood for a normal chat.
"So, Eve when will the report be ready?" Riaz asked diverting the direction of the conversation.
Eva gulped nervously and pointed at the file in her hands. Her palms were sweating profusely and noticing her discomfort, Riaz asked "Is everything alright?"
Gaining her courage, Eva walked towards Riaz and sat beside him. She knew she had to explain things to him. He had all the rights to know about his dad and she didn't wanna hide anything from him.
Showing the papers in the file, she said "Dad's heart condition is worse than I thought. His inner lining and valves are damaged already and it got worse due to those tablets which contained drugs" she said and took a deep breath before continuing "Did he stop alcohol intake?"
"He had lessened the amount of intake but not actually stopped," Riaz said in a low voice with his eyes fixed to the wall.
"Dad had to stop it or else it might result in f-more complex problems. His heart muscles are affected too" Eva replied exhaling the air she had suppressed inside her body.
Riaz nodded but it was more like convincing himself that everything will be alright. The first day his Dad had a heart attack in the middle of the night was the day his heart bloomed fear after a long time. He only had his Dad left in his family and he had no intention of leaving him. From Eva's words, he could understand that his Dad's condition had got worsen.
"There must be a solution right?" Riaz asked hopefully looking directly into Eva's eyes. Eva had a tough time answering the miscellaneous question and her lips were pressed into a thin line. "Surgery can only be a t-temporary treatment and transplant" she started and let out a sigh, "Transplant might lead- and success rate will be lower" Eva had trouble in choosing words and Riaz nodded slowly cutting off her words understanding what she was about to say.
"With proper diets and habits, dad can live for long years" Eva stated ignoring the lump forming in her throat.
Both of them were lost in words and continued to stare at space. The silence was neither awkward nor uncomfortable.
Eva didn't want to believe the bitter truth but as a doctor herself, she knew she had to accept the reality. She reminisced the first time she had called Mr. Wilton 'Dad'. Without her realization, she had formed a special bond with Mr. Wilton and she wanted the bond to stay strong forever. She felt the fatherly love with him which he missed for so long.
On the other hand, Riaz started feeling a void in his heart. His father is the only person he cherishes a lot in his life. His father was the only happiest reason for his existence. The reason he continued to stay after his mother's and younger brother's death was due to his dad. His dad was his everything. Despite his sadness, he was grateful that he had got Eva by his side. Not just because as she was a doctor but she was more kind-hearted towards his Dad. She considers his dad as hers and he was thankful to her in all aspects. He vowed to himself to make her his Dad's daughter-in-law as soon as possible. He knew only Eva could make his dad happier and he was determined to give his dad his happiness.
"We'll get going then," Riaz said and got up from the couch. Eva didn't know why but her legs involuntarily followed him.
They both reached Mr. Wilton's room and seeing them both together Mr. Wilton's mouth curled up into a warm smile. Brent was sitting on the stool beside Mr. Wilton and currently cutting an apple into pieces.
"Hi, Eva dear," Mr. Wilton said grinning.
"Hi, dad!" Eva replied hiding her emotions with a smile.
But Mr. Wilton didn't accept that pretty smile since he asked, "Dear, What is with the sad face of yours?"
"Dad! I am perfectly fine. You should worry about yourself first" Eva muttered but it was more like a warning.
"Tell him more, Eva. Dad never listens to anyone. I have told him a hundred times to take care of his health but he is way more stubborn" Brent declared out of the blue making Eva give a death glare to Mr. Wilton. The poor old man looked down at his lap not able to face her scary gaze. But deep inward he felt happy that Eva cared for him so much.
"Dad if you keep doing like this, then I won't speak to you" Eva mumbled making the old man widen his eyes.
"Dear-" But before Mr. Wilton could speak his words were cut off by Eva.
"And Brent from today Dad should never take alcohol not even a drop and no oily food items will be given to him. He should follow proper diet plans and you must take care of that. And if he refuses to do so, then inform me. Understand?" Eva said with a straight face.
"Sure, Eva!" Brent exclaimed showing her a thumbs up.
"I will text the whole diet chart to you," Eva said letting out a sigh.
"Wait! You both have each other's number?" a deep voice came from behind startling Eva.
"The almighty Riaz Wilton had said something. Wow!" Brent said chuckling, making Eva suppress a peal of laughter.
"Answer my question!" Riaz notified furrowing his eyebrows and looking directly into those pretty almond eyes of Eva.
"Yes, We do! And what about that?" Eva muttered before averting her gaze from him.
"Why?"
"Cause we are friends"
"From when?"
"From our first meeting"
"Then why don't you have mine?" he interrogated straight away.
"And why should I?" she asked him as a matter of fact. "Oh! Do you mean we are friends?" she added.
"Friends? Never!" he replied shrugging his shoulders. "Anyways give me your mobile phone"
"Why should I?"
"Stop asking damn questions! It's annoying! Now give it to me!"
Eva thought for a bit but still decided to give him her mobile phone. She saw him saving his number and before she could look more, he lifted it high so that she couldn't see what he was doing. Two-three minutes have passed and still, he was doing something with her mobile phone.
"What are you doing? Give it back! I need to go look after the patients" she said but there came no reply. Fed up by his behavior she tried snatching the phone from him but unfortunately, he lifted it high above her head making her pout.
"Just wait for a damn minute rabbit!" Riaz said chuckling.
And after a minute as promised Riaz handed over her phone to Eva. She looked over the phone to find what he did but sadly she couldn't find any. She just shrugged it off cause there is nothing in her phone anyways.
Mr. Wilton and Brent were looking at the lovey-dovey couple at the front. Both of them had already forgotten about their mere existence. Brent had stopped cutting the apples and he looked at Riaz who was smiling unconsciously at Eva.
"Dad! I'll see you later" Eva declared with an appealing smile before slipping her phone in her white coat pockets.
She waved everyone a goodbye except Riaz before exiting the room. Sooner, Riaz left too as he had lots of business to attend to.
Brent was still in his shocked expression after seeing the smile on his boss's face and Mr. Wilton's heart fluttered reminiscing the precious moment of the two young people. He knew they would make a great pair.
