The next morning, Esther is handed a bouquet of flowers, and lets the front door shut as she looks for the card, smiling when she sees the name of the sender.
Aziraphale just happens to be walking down the stairs and towards the front door right at that moment, and upon seeing the flowers, asks excitedly,
“Oh my! Where did those come from?”
Esther tells her, unable to contain her excitement, “They’re from Theo! He just invited me to the ball! Bubbles and Wine is supplying the champagne, and asked me to be his plus one!”
Aziraphale is nothing but happy for her, “That’s wonderful! I’m so glad.”
Esther notes, “I know I’ve been to the palace before, but never with a date! Nothing this romantic.”, then looks down at herself, “Oh no. What am I going to wear? We need to go shopping!”
Aziraphale quickly shakes his head in dismissal, “Oh, my dear, no. I think what I wore to the welcoming reception will suffice plenty.”
Esther repeats, “You’re wearing that to the palace?”, clearly not fully on board with that idea.
“Of course. I thought I’d have it cleaned and pressed, make it look presentable.”
Esther keeps nodding, like she’s trying to act supportive, but even the angel can see she’s not buying it, “Oh dear. You don’t agree?”
Esther calls behind him, “Mackin! Could you please put these in some water? And man the desk for me.”, and once the flowers are out of her hands, she takes Aziraphale by the arm, declaring,
“You and I are going shopping and that’s that.”
She takes them straight to a dress shop that also sells matching suits, and immediately, Aziraphale is drawn the one in the front, which, for once, looks to be currently in style.
But out loud, all he says is, “These are all so extraordinary.”, as he looks through more on the rack. “But isn’t this a bit much?”
Esther reminds him, “It’s the royal palace, Ezra. A bit much would be an improvement.”
They both chuckle, right as Esther adds, “And knowing the owner doesn’t hurt either. They’ll give us a discount.”
Aziraphale notes in wonderment, “Do you know everyone?”, to which Esther replies, “Yes I do.”, then grabs a coat off the rack. “Try this one on.”
Aziraphale stops to look at it, contemplating for a moment before Esther stops him, “Just try it on! Please?”, and really, what can Aziraphale do but just take it and walk over to the dressing room?
A moment or two later, he walks out wearing it, and as he checks it out in the mirror, Esther walks out in a dress to do the same.
