CHAPTER TWELVE

Sarah Whitney did not like to be told she couldn't have something, anything that she had set her sights on. When she arrived at Horseland, she had done her best to appear helpful and kind. She was those things, but she had begun to feel the privilege of her wealth and it slowly masked the generosity she had once shown. She liked nice things and there is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting nice things so long as those things want you too.

Will Taggert was a nice thing that had caught her eye that did not want her back, and in her heart she knew that there was no amount of money that would buy her his affection. She had to admit she was embarrassed about how much she liked him and how possessive she was becoming towards the boy. After she tried to kiss him and he snapped at her, she sat outside the barn waiting for her driver to come pick her up. What had she not seen? Had she become so selfish that she assumed everyone loved her?

In the midst of her existential crisis, she did not hear footsteps approach her. A cold woman's voice interrupted her thoughts. "How would you like to get back at him?"

Sarah looked up, seeing an elegant middle aged woman in a large had with a scarf of lavender silk wrapped stylishly around her neck. "Who?"

"Will. I saw him reject you. It's not fair to such a pretty girl," The woman purred in a very persuasive tone. "How would you like to get a little revenge?"

The offer of revenge smelled like a dead fish left out in the sun to Sarah. She didn't deserve revenge. Will really hadn't wronged her; if anything, she had wronged him. The old empathetic Sarah rose up in her again. This woman had been watching her and Will--watching teenagers. Sarah stood, rising to her full height with her shoulders stiffly pinned back in her best posture. "I think you should leave."

"He rejected you, stupid boy. You could get the upper hand in this, make him regret his choice. He would be begging to--"

"You should leave before I call the police." Sarah cut her off. "You are trespassing. This barn is closed for the night and you are not welcome. Go before I call them." She pulled out her phone and began to dial the police.

Tina slinked away to a car that had been disguised in the shadows of the road which had a beautiful canopy of old trees. Once in her car, she smacked the dashboard. She had been so sure she would gain a spy in this spurned crush. What had she misjudged? Certainly that had been a spat of unrequited affection...Maybe she was losing her edge.

Still that boy from the derby had been quite useful...perhaps he could be bribed again...

                                                     ****

Sarah sat at her desk staring at a blank piece of paper. A so far empty apology to will. What would she say? She missed how they had been friends and it was her fault that their friendship had been ruined over the last year by her jealous comments and unwanted advances. She began to write and hoped that Will could at least forgive her.
