Ava Handler woke up very early. This was normal for her as she had animals to tend to along with her son and husband. Will wasn't quite back from his road trip yet. Where had he gone with that friend? She cursed herself for being inattentive. She should know where her nephew was; she practically raised the boy. She knew she had done a better job than Tina would have.
Ava wasn't boasting; she wasn't a bragger. It was simply a fact that out of the two sisters, Ava was the one with a conscience. Tina had only ever thought of the child as a toy to show off to her party friends. That had certainly been a row when Ava had gotten custody of Will. Tina argued maternal rights, Ava argued for the welfare of the child. The sisters had never been close, but since the legal battle they had been entirely incompatible. They hadn't spoken so much as a hello since. Really, it wasn't fair at all to Will. Ava felt she had robbed him of his mother though she had done it to protect him from her.
Now there was this business with sabotage at a horse show. Ava couldn't shake the feeling that Tina was involved. It was too...personal? Not personal, Ava thought. It was too violent for the barn the show had been at. And for that matter, no one in the circle that she let her students show in was that petty. So it couldn't be a fellow barn. All the kids were victims, so it wasn't specific to the children. No, it made Horseland look bad. That made Ava look bad. It was a personal attack on Ava Handler.
After her chores, she took a shower and washed her brown hair free of bits of hay. She got dressed in nicer clothes than she normally wore. She was going to see her sister.

A real date. What did 'real dates' have? They had a clear romantic intent, generally a nice setting, pleasant conversation and giddy laughter. The problem with them was that a lot of settings were too public. Will could tell Rory was not ready to be out to the world even if he had agreed to a date, and neither was Will.
The boys were almost back from their investigating road trip and had been holding hands most of the way. They had talked about what they each liked to do and were now sort of friends. Will gave Rory a hug as he dropped him off at home. Once Will pulled into Horseland's driveway, he saw that the girls were still at the barn.
He parked the truck and went into the barn aisle. They all turned to smile at him and greet him. He wanted to tell Molly and Alma that he had gotten a date, but Sarah was there. Sarah who flirted in a very obvious and uncomfortable way with him.
"Will! You look tired," Sarah exclaimed. "Want some of my cocoa?"
Will put up a hand to stop her offering him the hot mug.
"How was your trip?" Molly smiled at him knowingly.
"Good, everything went good."
"Who did you go with and what did you do?" Sarah asked like she was a detective interrogating a prime suspect.
Will exchanged looks with Molly and Alma. He was already getting irritated with Sarah. "Hung out with Leo, and anyway, I'm tired. I'm going to bed." He turned and left.
As he was walking up to the house, he heard footsteps behind him. Then a hand grabbed his arm. Then he was being pulled into a perfumed hug, and someone's lips were on his. He ripped himself out of the clinging embrace and pushed Sarah away. He used his sleeve to wipe off his mouth. "What the hell, Sarah?" He yelled at her.
"You were taking too long to make the first move," Sarah purred and winked at him.
"I don't like you or anyone like you!" Will hissed at her, turning to go back to the house.
