The email address had to be Leo. This whole debacle was already too personal to Horseland for it not to be Will's childhood friend. Will paced around his room in front of his laptop in thought. What to email? He couldn't very well say 'Hey Leo, do you know some lady with a hat who hates my family?' or something along those lines. He thought that would be a little too forward for the first time talking to Leo in about three years. His friend had moved away and they had lost touch.
Then Will had an idea. He could say him and Rory were on a road trip and they were passing through. He needed to bring Rory since Rory was the one who knew what the woman looked like, but he would need a reason to stop at Leo's with him. Leo had grown up with Will, knowing he preferred the company of girls over other boys when it came to being friends. The two friends had had a conversation over it once when Leo wanted to play touch football with some other guys and asked Will to come. Will had said no, Leo asked why. Why would he rather hang out with girls at the barn? Because other boys were intimidating, and Will didn't want them to find out he liked boys. This conversation had happened a few weeks before Leo moved away. So Leo knew Will didn't like having boy friends, but having Rory pretend to be a boyfriend would be a good cover.
"Will, what are you thinking?" Will stopped in front his mirror and spoke to himself. "You are assuming this email belongs to the only person who knows you are gay and you are planning to go on a wild goose chase over a few accidents at a horse show, while planning to have the guy who helped cause them pretend to be your boyfriend. You can't ask that of Rory, even if it is sort of his fault and he is cute..."
He rubbed his temples as he flopped on to the dark grey bedspread of his twin bed. "But why can't I? Because this is all theory...and asking Rory to pretend would mean he would know about me."
Will decided to sleep on the idea about bringing Rory under that façade. However, he sent an email to the email he thought was Leo anyway, and it said:
'Hey Leo,
How are you? I'm really sorry I haven't been good about keeping in touch. How is wrestling going and is Tommy still playing soccer? Anyway, I have been planning to go camping, and the national park I want to go to is past where you moved to. Would it be alright if I stopped in to see you?
Sincerely,
Will'
It wasn't a very personal email, and it didn't reflect the relationship of two kids who had been childhood best friends. Will had stared at the email for a long time before he clicked that rectangular button reading 'Send'. Why make it too personal when he wasn't even sure if this was the right person. He shut his laptop, standing up. His back popped as he cracked it before grabbing comfy clothes to sleep in. It was already late.
As Will got into bed, pulling the thick blankets up to his chin and turning on his side, his mind began to wander. Who was the woman? What did she want? His thoughts slowly drifted from that lady to Roran McKenna.
Rory in his jeans. Rory in his grey T-shirt. Rory in his arms, playing with his blond hair. A slight smile crept onto Will's relaxed face as he dreamed about the boy, and he slept until his alarm would scream at him to wake.
