Author note- sorry for the slow update on this one! (Unedited)
The first round of tests General Sinclair ordered were routine physical tests that all of us go through each year. Emmie sat at the end of a bed in the infirmary with her hands tucked under her legs, something she does to hide her nerves. She has a fear of needles although she would deny it if you asked her. A nurse approached and Emmie held out her arm for her to draw blood. I flinched when the needle pierced her skin, resisting the urge not to rip it from the nurse's hand and throw it across the room. I turned my head away, I hated this, what they were about to put her through. It killed me that I can do nothing but stand here and watch while they conducted their tests.
"That's enough," I said when the nurse collected one-two many vials of her blood. The nurse opened her mouth to protest but I stood between her and Emmie not giving her a chance to respond. I grabbed a piece of gauze and held it to Emmie's arm to stop the slight bleeding. I heard the nurse huff over my shoulder and she gathered the blood samples before walking away and leaving the room.
"I think you pissed her off," Emmie said looking up at me through her lashes.
"I don't care" I shrugged and removed the gauze from her arm.
"She was being greedy." Emmie's lips twitched into a half-smile and she had a glimmer of amusement in her eyes.
"Come with me" we both snapped our heads to the nurse who stood in the doorway, stone-faced with her hands clasped behind her back. Emmie hopped off the bed and we both followed the nurse into another room where they had everything set up to give her an MRI scan which Emmie did without complaint. The nurse once again ushered us out to another room, this one containing what looked like a small power box similar to the indestructible one Emmie shattered with her powers during the assessments.
"Enter the box" the nurse instructed with a stern voice and I didn't like her attitude. Emmie stepped forwards but I held my arm out stopping her.
"First, tell us what for?" I asked the displeased nurse who folded her arms and raised an eyebrow.
"It is to test your daearies powers." She said looking solely at me. She spoke as though Emmie was just an extension of me like she was just an animal to be tested on.
"No." I crossed my arms mimicking her.
"This isn't an option" she replied through clenched teeth.
"Do you not know what happened the last time you lot stuck her in one of those boxes?" The nurse pursed her lips into a thin line. Of course, she knew what happened, it's all anyone has been talking about.
"Kit, it's fine," Emmie said and I could already hear the exhaustion in her voice. No, I'm not letting them put her through this again.
"No, it's not." I turned from Emmie to the nurse
"we are done here." The nurse opened her mouth to speak but I cut her off
"you have her blood and the scans, that's enough for today."
"You do not have the authority—" she snapped but I ignored her and turned to Emmie.
"Hungry?" I asked Emmie who's eyes shifted from me to the nurse, she was biting her lip, amusement lighting up her icy blue eyes.
"Starving." She beamed when I grabbed her hand in mine and pulled her towards the door. She could no longer hold back the laugh she was holding
"she definitely hates you." Emmie said and I twisted my head to her and smiled. After lunch, my unit was called to the training room to where Killian's unit was already waiting with General Sinclair. Everyone automatically began gearing up when General Sinclair announced that we were being deployed out into the field. Our mission was to clear a small town that they believe is secretly housing members of the rebellion. I wanted more information but I knew pushing for more details right now wouldn't be wise. General Sinclair was already watching me and Emmie like a hawk, I didn't want to give him any reason to be suspicious of us, to let him think I am incapable of following orders as a solider. I glanced to Emmie and the others who were selecting what weapons they were going to take. Emmie strapped two daggers to her calves, a sword at her side and a bow on her back. I couldn't help let out a small laugh at the number of weapons she was taking knowing her power alone would be more useful. We all marched through the building in twos, soldiers standing next to their daearies with general Sinclair leading the way. Horses had been lined outside ready to transport us to the town. Daearies would ride with their soldiers, after all, they were only seen as a barrier and a weapon to protect the soldiers. I climbed into the saddle of a chestnut horse, holding out my hand to help Emmie onto the back. One by one each horse followed the black carriage that General Sinclair and a few soldiers tasked with protecting him were travelling in. We all rode in silence, no one wanting to question aloud about the situation we were heading into when finally Emmie broke the silence.
