Will shouted go and the conditioning was off. Josh was ahead of by two yards as we came to the last inchworms. I tied it up at the end of that and then running. I never was too good at running. I pushed myself though. I needed this captains position. It came down to 15 yards. He was ahead. 5 yards. He was ahead. 2 yards. I'm ahead. I won. I'm captain. I'm captain!!
"Congrats Cage!" Nathan exclaimed.
"Thanks,"
"Okay guys, we are gonna have the captains meeting then we will tell you the game plan before school tomorrow morning." I heard murmurs of 'okay' and 'see you later'.
After everyone left, it was just Nathan and I left. We sat down on the bench at the field. I grabbed my soccer sweatshirt.
"Hey, I didn't know you played for the dragons?"
"Yea, I've played since I was three." The Dragons were our local soccer team.
"Me too. I played with Adam."
"Yea I know. I was on your team."
"You were?"
"Yup. But I was always in goal. Didn't you play striker?"
"Yea."
"That explains why you never noticed me. We were always on opposite sides of the field."
"I guess so. Well, let's get started on the plan. I think Adam should play wing. Josh mid-line...." He went on and ended with. "You in goal, and I'll be defense."
"Okay, that sounds great."
"Cool. See you around Cage!"
"You can call me Emily you know."
"Maybe." And with that he left me staring in his eyes.
"I better get going. My dad is waiting for me. I'm sure we're giving Adam a ride too. You need one?"
"No. I'm walking today."
"You sure?"
"Yea, I'm good. See you at practice ca-, I mean Emily."
"See you Nathan!"
