|Poland,
Auschwitz
Year: 1943|
Multiple children, both boys and girls were circling around an elder and the children were eagerly waiting to hear the rest of the story that he had to tell them.
"There is but mere whispers, young one. Of a girl who moves faster then a shadow. This girl, she is said, to be able to pass all of the guards and in doing so, she has never been seen in the eyes of man." Erik Lehnsherr was captivated by the tale that one of the elders told him while they stacked their beds up against the wall.
"No one has ever seen this girl?" Erik questioned and the elder at his words, simply shook his head. "Why not? The legend must come from somewhere.... right?" Erik asked softly and the elder shook his head as they all quieted and they walked out of the barracks.
Some of them were separated and meanwhile, Erik Lehnsherr kept close to his mother and father, while some of his fellow children and teenagers, they were all put to work or separated from the others.
Erik saw a flash of darkness out of corner of his eye. However, when he turned to look, it was simply one of many shadows of a gun, that was just pointed directly at his face.
Erik had been separated from the group of his fellow Jews and he was currently being beaten mercilessly by a group of Nazis, who started hitting him with their guns.
"Stop this madness!" A voice shouted loudly at the Nazi group in Polish and to their shock, without any sorts of all warning they all were snatched away from the beaten boy, and he could not see what had happened, since he had his hands over his face to protect it all from the weapons.
Erik felt a gentle touch on his shoulder and he hesitantly opened his fingers up to be able to see through a small crack in his fingers. A girl stood in the direct line of sight to him where seconds earlier, there had been savage soldiers. "Follow me." She said and Erik's eyes widened. "Get up." She stated and she motioned to him, as his eyes widened. "Come on!" She said as he accepted the hand up and within a second or two, they had suddenly been swallowed up by the shadows.
Erik stood next to the girl against the wall, as they had crept along the paths until they had hit the wall. "Who are you?" He asked softly and in response, her hand clamped over his mouth in a clear way of telling him to stop with all of the chatter. Erik nodded slightly and she moved her hand away, as the soldiers had passed by them.
"Follow me." She murmured very quietly and she started to creep along the stone brick wall and Erik followed her rather reluctantly and she looked over her shoulder as a gunman was shouting and pointing at them as he shouted. "Run!" She snapped and Erik bolted off quickly after her, and they ran off.
Erik followed her willingly until he realized that she was running straight at a brick wall. "We can't!" He said as he spotted where she was headed and he believed that they couldn't... right up until he blinked and saw her run right through the shadows.
Erik steeled his nerves and ran through after her, feeling the cold wash of the shadows and he came out in a shadowy hole, where the girl was pacing the floor in silence, as she was shaking her head slightly.
"Who are you?" Erik asked and she looked at him, as she shifted her arm and there was a number there, one of the many prisoners that had been all identified and had proven herself to be useful, rather than just sent to the gas chambers.
"You have heard the stories. A girl disappearing from sight, as if she was never there in the first place. A ghost, a story..." She said with a sigh.
"A whisper." Erik interrupted and she nodded slightly, as she sat on the floor of the abandoned building. "What is this place?" He asked and she looked at him.
"This building, it used to be my family's home." She admitted and Erik's eyes were hesitant, and she nodded slightly. "Sit." She offered and so he did, and she poured water into a cup. It was dirty water, but still water.
"You hide here?" Erik asked softly of her as she held out the cup of water to him not meeting his eyes at all. "What is your name?" He asked and she was looking at the rusted cup in her hands and she sighed.
"Hanna." The word was quiet, barely even audible as it were as she looked up at him. "Who are you?" She asked and he looked at her.
"Erik. Erik Lehnsherr." He stuck out his hand for her to shake and she was looking at it for a moment, before she hesitantly reached out her hand in a quiet response to shake it. "Are we safe here?" He asked and she looked at him, nodding slightly.
"They never come to look here anymore. My entire family, mama, papa, aunt, uncle, brother, sisters... all of them. They were all taken. I got out, I managed to get away from the chambers and they thought I would be useful. I was gone the next day." She said and he looked at her.
"You can run through all shadow shapes?" Erik asked as Hanna nodded slightly and she quietly sipped at their dirty water. "Why don't you leave? Just run away?" He asked and she was shaking her head.
"I cannot leave people like you and I alone. I give them hope, the stories of me. Children can escape, if they are smart or quick enough." Hanna said softly and Erik looked at her. "You can stay here, if you wish. You do not have to go back to Auschwitz." Hanna said quietly and Erik shook his head at her words. "You cannot? Why?" She asked and he looked at the tattoo on his arm with a sigh.
"My mother and my father. They are still in Auschwitz." Erik murmured as he looked at her and she nodded very slightly at his words. "I have to go, go back there and help them." He said as she stood up and there were shadows cast against the wall.
Erik looked at the wall where she stood and Hanna held out her hand to point at the wall, at first having her fist clenched and slowly, she opened it so that her palm was flat, and she was pointing it in the direction of the wall.
The shadows began to swirl around and forming different shapes, until it became a sort of portal and Hanna's eyes appeared to be completely silent in terms of emotions. "Go back. Go and help your family, as I could not help mine." Hanna stated and he was nodding slightly, as he looked back at her when he was walking toward the portal.
"Will I see you again?" Erik asked as Hanna tilted her head very slightly to the side at his words.
"That depends on how bad your situation may be." Hanna stated and Erik said nothing, as he stepped into the portal and Hanna lowered her hand, as Erik disappeared from view and Hanna allowed the portal to disappear.
"What have I done?"
She thought to herself, as she lay on the concrete floor of her family's old home and she shut her eyes with a small sigh.
