Basically, Taiwan has his first touch to the "world" during the age of navigation. At the time, Taiwan's identity was an "sea merchant", but you can just basically see it as "pirate" because it is.
Although he was a "pirate", he actually sales(monopolies) some goods, too to nearby countries on his way and make money.
