The intercom switches on and we all pay attention."Kamohelo Molapo, please come to the office. Kamohelo Molapo, to the office please." The intercom switches off and the class stares at me. You are only ever called to the office if your parents are here or you are in trouble. I grab my things and make my way to the office building.
"Good day, I was called on the intercom." The lady looks at me before she clicks on what I am going on about. She searches for something before she opens the gate leading to the office.
I stand in front of her desk before she pulls out a book.
"Your mother called; she needs you back home right now; she did not say why, just that it is rather urgent, and she needs you." What could mom want that I could not tend to after school? At least I get the day off. I thank the lady and make my way out of school and I begin walking back home. The way back home always felt shorter than the way to school, never understood why. As I cross the street, a fancy black car approaches and the driver walks out. He looks as though he is going into the house, but before he does, he looks in my direction and waves.
I wave back. I was being kind, that is all I was doing. I make it home and my mother does not seem to be there. I call her and she says she is on her way and so I text Kate about my absence before making snacks.
"Guess who I have?" In walks my mom and my dad who I have not seen in three weeks. I love my dad, so when he is away for some time, I tend to be a tad bit sadder than usual. I jump into his arms. My dad rarely leaves for this long, which is why I was worried; maybe worried is the wrong word, but I was paranoid something would happen to him.
"How has my little girl been?" I let go of him as I go make snacks for us all while updating my dad on my life, particularly the books and series I have binge-watched.
"So I finally got to watching Queen of the South, right, and I was bored at first, but something happened by the third episode,e, and I was hooked, or is it the second? I can't remember but one of those."
"So should my wife and I watch it?"
"Yeah, I think my mom would like that, I finally finished the Ackerman series. After all this time, I am done, and I would like to be reimbursed; I spent my pocket money on the last three books."
"Why didn't you tell me to send you the money?"
"So you can give it to me now. Come on, Dad, catch up." He turns to face me. "You will give it to me when you are ready, but preferably before the end of next week. Kate is having a party, and I would like to go."
"Okay." He nods before he gets lost in my mother's being. Many mothers have to fight with their daughters for their husband's attention but no matter how hard I try, my dad will always pay attention to my mom. I love that for them.
"I am going to my room; I will come to fetch my plate when you are done cooking, Ma." She nods and I head to my room.
"Kamohelo!"
"Ma!"
"Tlhoho!" Why did she have to wait until I was in my room? [Translation: Come here]
"Ma?"
"Can you bring us the wine, two glasses and the board I made?" She makes it seem like I can say no but I can not. I fetch the things and place them in front of them.
"I am going to have my headphones on." They nod but as I reach the threshold
"You forgot the corkscrew." Of course, I did.
