You Owe Me Two

We have been driving for the past 9 hours. So far the drive has been fairly uneventful. Dad is still sort of mad at us for the hotel incident so he's stayed pretty quiet the whole time. As for Sam, he's been asleep for most of the ride so far. To be fair we did wake up at 6:30 in the morning but by now he should be well-rested. He has no excuse. I took a nap earlier too, but for the most part, I've been awake. I've mostly been passing the time by looking out the window and making up stories in my head.

I've also been thinking about victoria. I don't know why I can't stop thinking about her. I barely know her. I have dated other girls for far longer and I barely ever think about them. Why is she so different?

I can't wait till we get to Bobby's tonight. He'll have a phone there and I'll be able to call her.

Dad's making us stay with bobby instead of getting us a hotel. He doesn't trust us to leave us alone anymore. That's part of the reason he's so pissed. Now he has to drive us all the way to Bobby's instead of just sticking us in some random hotel. Well, the joke's on him I'd much rather stay at Bobby's than some random hotel.

The only downside to staying with Bobby is that whenever dad leaves us there he stays away a lot longer and since we just pissed him off he'll probably stay away for even longer. He always leaves for a long time if he's mad at us. I guess he needs more time to cool off... that's what I keep telling myself anyway.

"hey dad can we stop soon I have to pee." Sam finally woke up from his nine-hour nap. I have no idea how he can sleep for so long, especially in the car.

"Yeah, whatever I need to get gas anyways but you better eat something there cus' we're not stopping for a while after this" dad grumbled in response to which I rolled my eyes at.

I could hear Sammy shuffle around in the back I ignored him and continued to look out the window but It wasn't long before I felt Sam hit me with a paper ball.

"ow Sam, what the hell?" I looked back at him getting ready to hit him ten times harder with the paper ball.

"oh quit being such a baby I barely threw it" As Sam said this he gestured to open up the paper. Sam and I do this a lot during car rides. If we have something to say to each other that we don't want dad to hear we just write it down and pass it to the other. I quickly unraveled the crumpled-up piece of paper. On the inside is Sam's chicken scratch handwriting.

"Geez Sammy you're handwriting's shit"

"Oh shut up and read it!"

"Care to share with the class boys?" Dad grumbled but it was clear he didn't actually care that we were conversing without him, he was just annoyed with us and looking for something to pick on.

"No. " Sam and I said together before resuming our previous conversation.

It took me a while due to sam's practically illegible handwriting but eventually, I figured it out.

"You're welcome. now you can call your girlfriend. there's bound to be a payphone at the next gas station"

Of course! how had I not thought of that before? I can call victoria at the gas station! I looked back at Sam to see he was wearing that mischievous grin I hate. Ugh, what does he want now? I quickly looked around to find a pen to write back. I soon found one in the glovebox and began writing my reply.

"thanks but what's in it for you?" I wrote and threw the paper back to Sam. He was quick to reply.

"As of right now nothing. I just want you to remember this moment next time I ask for a favor."

I looked back and rolled my eyes at him but I wasn't really mad at him in fact I was overjoyed. I turned back around and continued my daydreams as I looked out the window.

With this newfound hope lasting this day-long car drive with my angry father didn't seem so bad. I began thinking about all the things I wanted to say. What should I start with? "How are you?" That's boring but I do want to know how she is. Did she enjoy all her Halloween candy? I hope she did as I barely got any. Though Sam did manage to stash a few of our full-sized candy bars when dad wasn't looking.

It wasn't long before dad was pulling off onto the next exit and into the closest town. It was a fairly small town but it did have a good selection of fast food, though, the chances of dad letting us get fast food are as good as nothing. Dad barely lets us get fast food when he's in the best of moods let alone now. Even the idea of fast food is so absurd that neither Sam nor I even suggest it.

Dad quickly turns into the first gas station we come across. We are all quick to get out and stretch our legs. Without giving us so much as a glance Dad immediately starts pumping gas and sam is quick to head inside the store for food.

"Sam wait!" I quickly stop him before he gets too far. I jog over to him and give him enough money for food for all three of us.

"Here that should be enough for lunch for you, me, and dad. You know what dad likes and just get me a hotdog with ketchup and mustard. Oh! and a Dr.Pepper." Having done this a million times before sam and I have our father's order completely memorized. I don't know how the man doesn't get tired of the same thing over and over but I've never heard him complain. Not once.

"Oh yeah, I'll get your food while you talk to your lady friend. I'll make sure to go real slow so you can have a nice long conversation" he pauses for a second but I know better.

"Ugh what now"

"You know what" and there's that grin again.

"Ugh fine! I owe you one"

"Two actually. You owe me two." With that Sam runs off for our lunch.

I roll my eyes as I watch him gleefully scurry to the door, his annoyance only ruining my mood before I remember the real task at hand: calling victoria.

Once I finally get to the payphone I enter the fee and type in the number off the paper victoria had given me. It's not long before someone answers.

"Hello?"

"Hi victoria"
