The Explosion

James and I sat in the little corner booth of the milkshake parlour. "I can't believe you like banana milkshakes." I grimaced, earning an eye roll from James.

He sipped on his milkshake, "It's delicious." He argued, "No. Banana flavoured anything is disgusting!" I laughed, proudly drinking my chocolate milkshake.

"You're just basic. Chocolate? Come on, you've gotta have better taste buds than that."

I kept my gaze on his eyes as I slurped the last bit of my milkshake through the straw, the bottom of the glass getting clearer and clearer.

My phone went off in my pocket and I nearly shat myself, "Did you just get a text?" I asked James, glancing around the room. He nodded, "Yeah, why?"

I held up my phone and watched his face drop, "Fuck."

I told you DNA was everywhere...

I was so focused on my text I hadn't even realised out milkshake glasses were gone.

I blinked, my heart beating rapidly, "The straws." I whispered to James.

The parlour suddenly seemed very cramped as everyone in the room seemed to become very small, "Sofia?" James asked, placing a hand on mine, "Hmm?" I said, "You okay?"

A car alarm brought me back to reality and I jumped, "What-"

"My car!" James yelled, jumping up from his seat as he ran out the door, I chased after him, blocking my ears as the car alarm rang loudly, "What's going on?" I yelled, "I don't know. This only happens is someone tried to break in."

I noticed a piece of paper sitting under his windshield wipers, "James." I said, picking up the black paper with silver writing.

Open me.

It was a bunch of pictures, "Oh my God." I said horrified, "This is a lot more serious than I thought."

A picture of Mason touching the body to see if it was dead, Evelyn breaking my fingers and my blood in the hallway and James wiping his mouth on a napkin in the parlour just now.

"They're still here." I said to James who nodded silently at me, "But where?"

I scanned the area. The carpark, the buildings, every nook, cranny and alleyway in plain sight. Nothing, "I can't see anything or anyone."

Dammit!

"What's that noise?" James asked me, "What noise?" I ignored him and kept staring straight ahead, "That clicking noise?"

"I don't hear anything." I started walking toward the grassy patch across the road before I felt a hand on my elbow dragging me back. Before I knew what was happening, there was a loud bang and I felt myself get thrown across the air, before landing with a thud and rolling.

Everything went still for a second and I heard explosions and screaming. I squeezed my eyes shut, my head throbbing immensely.

"Sofia." Someone called. They're voice sounded foggy, "Sofia!" My name was being screaming and I opened my eyes, blinking twice to try and adjust my eyes.

I had finally come too and realised James's car had blown up.

I rolled onto my side, coughing while I felt people touching me.

My ears were ringing and my nostrils burnt with the stench of fire and rubber. "What's going on?" I coughed, trying to lift my head up.

I couldn't hear anything and I tried to reach for James.
