The Locked Door

Sherlock stood on the deck of the ship, the wind whipping through his hair. Before, he would have been enjoying this, but now he was deep in thought and kind of freaked. And it didn't help that there was a dead body laying on the ground next to him.

It was weird that he could see the wind whipping through the sails, but he couldn't hear it. It was weird that he could see the waves crashing against the side of the boat, but he couldn't hear it. It was weird that the ship wasn't creaking, like most wooden ships do. It was like the sound had been turned off, but he could hear himself and the other people on the ship.

The Doctor put a hand on his shoulder, making him jump in fright. "You scared me!" he whispered. He wasn't quite sure why he was whispering, but it probably had something to do with the eerie silence surrounding the ship.

"Sorry. Anyway, let's get to it. We've almost reached our destination, and once we figure out what's going on over there, we can probably connect it back here."

"Can we maybe do this quickly? Redbeard's probably getting lonely." Sherlock asked, and the Doctor chuckled.

"Not to fear, I'm sure we'll get this done quick enough for Redbeard to be perfectly happy. Anyway, let's get started! Are you up for a little snooping?"

A smile spread across Sherlock's face. "I'm always up for snooping!" he exclaimed, "I snoop around my brother's room all the time, and he hasn't caught me yet."

The Doctor chuckled and ran around the deck of the ship, looking for a door or something. After a minute or two, he shouted, "Sherlock, come over here!"

Sherlock practically leapt across the deck and to the door where the Doctor was standing. "What is this?" he asked, clearly confused.

"I'm not sure," the Doctor frowned, "I've been on plenty of boats before, and I've never seen a door like this before, or this symbol anywhere."

Sherlock approached the door and examined the symbol. It was a curious looking thing, full of squiggles and arrows. It seemed to be pointing up at the sky, as none of the arrows pointed down. "What does it mean?" Sherlock asked, furrowing his brow.

"I'm not sure, but we're going to find out." The Doctor reached for the doorknob and slowly and dramatically turned it. Unlike in the movies, the door didn't swing open with a creak. Something was preventing it from turning. "It's not locked, more like it's jammed," he said, yanking on the handle, wriggling the door as much as he could.

"Couldn't you use that glory green screwdriver of yours?" Sherlock suggested, pointing to the Doctor's coat pocket.

The Doctor sighed. "It doesn't work on wood," he groaned, "I really have to make a setting for wood."

"So what do we do now?" Sherlock said, pressing his hands against the door. He pushed all of his body weight against the door, knowing that it wouldn't do anything, but it was worth a shot.

"Let's see..." The Doctor contemplated a way to get in. "Could we just..." He looked around the ship and saw an extra sword lying on the ground. "Who does that?" he asked, "I mean, handy for us, but who just leaves a sword on the ground?"

Sherlock shrugged. "What are we going to do with that sword?"

Instead of answering, the Doctor pulled the sword back and plunged it into the wood of the door. For some reason, it sank straight through until if hit something. "Just as I suspected," the Doctor softly whispered, "Something's not right here. This sword isn't supposed to come slip through the door this easily, so something's wrong there. And that thing at the end of the door isn't something you would find on an eighteenth century pirate ship. Let's find out what's on the other side of this door." He raised the sword again and swiftly cut a large hole through the middle of the door. Both he and Sherlock gasped at what they saw.

"That does not belong on a pirate ship," Sherlock's jaw dropped open. It was a door that looked sort of like a bank vault, with the highest security one could find. It looked more thirty-second century than eighteenth. "What do you suppose is behind that door?"

"Treasure. The secrets to the universe. Who knows?" The Doctor had a little kid gleam in his eyes as he examined the door. "How do we go about cracking this safe?"

Sherlock cracked his puny knuckles. "I've read a few books about this," he stood on his tiptoes to be eye level with the lock, "Give me a little while and I should theoretically be able to get this open. You keep watch."

The Doctor laughed with joy. "Aye, aye, captain."

Sherlock reached out touch the handle, but before he could, he heard a shout from behind him. "Stop!" yelled the gruff voice of a pirate.
