"Where are we going to go next?" Sherlock asked, nearly jumping with joy. His brown curls were bouncing all over his face and Redbeard was wagging his tail excitedly, his tongue hanging out.
The Doctor swallowed, wondering how he was going to tell Sherlock what he was about to tell him. "Well, I think it'd be best if we went home now," he finally muttered, "Don't want you to age too much while you're with me," he raised his voice and winked.
Sherlock giggled and collapsed onto the ground with Redbeard. "I guess I am pretty tired," he said with a sigh.
The Doctor pushed a few buttons on the TARDIS's control panel and they were off. "Now, Sherlock," he began, "Promise me you won't forget all that I taught you about the solar system that first trip we went on."
Sherlock nodded eagerly. "Oh, I won't forget a single word of it! I can still remember all of it now, so I won't ever forget it!" he exclaimed, and went on to recite what the Doctor had told him two years previously, almost word for word. The Doctor chuckled and turned his attention onto steering the TARDIS to the exact second in time that he needed to land in order for Sherlock to get back exactly where he had left.
Suddenly, the TARDIS lurched forward, and the Doctor lost his grip on the controls. His primary mission was now to land the TARDIS remotely close to when he had left. Something was pulling him forward in time, so the most he could do was latch onto the month and year that he had left and hope that it was as close as possible. Sherlock tumbled around on the floor as the wheezing noise came to an end and the blue box stopped spinning abruptly. Redbeard whined and scampered over to him, licking his face and shoving his nose into Sherlock's neck.
The Doctor smiled and threw open the door to the TARDIS. Luckily, it had crashed into the grass of Sherlock's backyard, so they wouldn't have to wander around trying to find his house. "Alright, Sherlock," he said with a sad smile, "It's time for you to go inside."
"You'll be back though, right?" Sherlock looked up at him with big, expecting, hopeful eyes. The Doctor sighed.
"Of course I'll be back," he reluctantly muttered. Sherlock clapped his hands together and bounded happily out of the TARDIS, Redbeard and the Doctor at his heels.
The Doctor felt his heart sinking. He didn't want to disappoint Sherlock, but he knew that what he did was too dangerous for an eleven year old boy who had a family, who had so much to live for. He could have died, they both could have died, and what would he have told Sherlock's family? He would never forgive himself if he took Sherlock on another trip in the TARDIS, at least in the near future. He could always come back later, when Sherlock was a little older, or he could take him on an off day, when he knew the TARDIS wasn't going to take them somewhere dangerous, but he couldn't do something like what had happened today.
Sherlock stepped into his house, and the Doctor turned around, knowing that he probably shouldn't be there when Sherlock walked into his house. He stood in the doorway of his ship and held his breath, hoping that he had landed in the right day.
The door hadn't even closed before there was a loud crash and a gasp. "Sherlock! Mum, Sherlock's back!" the voice of Sherlock's older brother Mycroft cried.
The Doctor heard footsteps and a scream as his mother ran down the stairs. "Sherlock! Redbeard! It's been a week, where have you been? We've been so worried! Oh, I'm so glad you're back! Both of you!" her words mushed together as she started to cry and could no longer be understood.
Sherlock immediately launched into a story about the adventure he had gone through, complete with pirates and swords and glowing balls of energy. The Doctor smiled and closed the door to the TARDIS, thinking about when he should visit Sherlock again.
Sherlock waited for the Doctor every day. He knew he was coming, he had promised, he wasn't going to break that promise. He kept waiting for the wheezing of the TARDIS, the sound that surely meant he would be whisked into an adventure.
It never came.
