~•Lucy's POV•~
Summer had just ended, fall was setting in. The trees swayed in a constant breeze, the leaves beginning to turn. My head was rested on my hand as I stared out the window, completely absorbed in my own space.
"Lucy, are you coming?" A familiar voice drew me out of my thoughts. I raised my head and my eyes landed on Mirajane and Levy.
"Ah, yeah. Let's go," I stand and stretch slightly as I do so. Erza and Lisanna joined us from the hallway. As we walked my arms swayed beside me and I tried to pick up on their chatter.
"...so cute! But I'm not sure if I should get it, it could end up being a waste!" Levy was exclaiming about something. Probably a book she wanted.
"Just get the book," Lisanna giggled. "what's the harm in it?" Mirajane and I nodded in agreement.
"Alright, it's settled then! Levy, get the book," Erza stated proudly. Levy laughed and nodded. We continued quietly, and I found myself subconsciously searching for one person. His features where hard to miss, and honestly he was such a hot head he would probably be making a ruckus anyway.
Mirajane noticed this and smirked. "Looking for somebody?" She asked innocently.
"No," I lie and glance away from her.
My answer caused her to laugh to herself. "You're looking for Natsu, aren't you?" She teased.
"I am not! I'm just...looking around," I finish lamely. By now the others had picked up on the conversation and were immediately interested since it had to do with me and my best friend Natsu.
"Sure, looking around for Natsu~!" Levy sang, and a bit loudly. I leapt at her and plopped my hand over her mouth to muffle her.
"Sh! People will hear you!!" I panic and look around frantically for signs anyone had noticed.
"Lucy, you're hopeless..." Mirajane shook her head and Lisanna laughed.
"You should just go tell him you like him," Erza suggested.
"I'd rather keep it to myself, and you guys should as well! It's not exactly something I want people to know," I say as we reach the hall leading to the cafeteria and branched off to the locker rooms.. Then I spot him, and remember I had something to ask him.
"Hey hey! Natsu!" I called out after the familiar pink-haired weirdo I called my best friend. I caught up to him as he eyed me suspiciously.
"What's up Luce?" He turned to face me, leaving a shoulder to his friends.
"I need you to help me study..." I laugh nervously. He sighs and readjusts his bag.
"Sure, just stay later tonight...ah, why don't you watch the practice until we are done? I can walk with you to your place then," he suggests. I nod in response.
"Okay, well I have to hurry. See you!" He waves and heads to the locker room. I let out a sigh and turn back where my friends where peeking around the corner.
"What?!" I exclaim and they scurry out, grinning like idiots.
"Oh no..." I groan, knowing what they where thinking.
"Are you gonna make a move on him? -Finally confess? -Gonna kiss him?" Their questions flooded me and I held up my hands and ducked my head to hide my flushed cheeks.
"Guys, he's my best friend. He'd never see me as anything more," I mutter quietly, silencing Erza, Levy, Mira and Lis.
"I think you'd be surprised," Lisanna's voice drew my attention, "to find out just how much he really cares for you Lucy." Her smile that I caught was bright and genuine. She seemed so confident that Natsu would return the feelings I had for him.
"He may be dense, but he has some sense. He's more mature than he seems," Erza adds, making me lift my head.
"And, he shows no other girl the same kind of caring as he shows you," Levy says reassuringly.
"Tell him Lucy, tell him how you feel," Mira said gently.
I shake my head. "I just can't," I turn and walk away. "I can't take that risk. Not again." I walk out to the fields where the guys where practicing. I sat down in the bleachers watching as they kicked around the ball, going through their routine.
I leaned against the fence between the bleachers and the sidewalk beside the track. I folded my arms over the cool metal and rested my head there as I watched the guys.
Natsu seemed so focused out there...but then he'd share laughs with his friends. He fit in perfectly there. After they finished I pushed off the fence and waited for Natsu to come out of the locker room. When he did he wrapped an arm over my shoulder and we walked home, talking about the day.
We got to my house and we headed in. I let him toss his bag in the front closet and then we headed to my room where we settled down to study. Natsu was-surprisingly-very intellectual when it came to school. I wasn't far behind him but I struggled from time to time. He guided me through the difficult math and eventually I caught on.
I sat up from the floor where I was working on problems to find him conked out on my bed. I exhaled heavily and shook my head. He'll probably end up staying here over night, not like it didn't happen often anyway.
I changed into night clothes before gently shaking him. "Hey, Natsu? Why don't you change your clothes real fast. Then you can go back to sleep," I say gently. He sits up and without saying a thing pulls his t-shirt over his head and yanked off his jeans, leaving him in only his boxers.
"Or strip, that works too..." I roll my eyes. "I'll sleep on the couch..." I get off the bed only to be grabbed around the waist and pulled back by him.
"Just stay here..." He breathes the words into the back of my neck, his warm breath sliding over my skin.
"Natsu, I shouldn't-" I protest but he responds by pulling me closer.
"Just sleep with me, Lucy." He said firmly but quietly. I turned my head over to see him. His eyes appeared to be closed so I let out a sigh and I push my legs under my covers.
And that night, I fell asleep in Natsu's arms for the first time.
