Backstory:

Before the events of this story, there was a 5-year war. All of the nations were fighting against each other and many died. As a result of the war, all of the fire benders died a gruesome death and none are known to have survived. After the war, Aang decided to get rid of his avatar powers and decided to be only an air bender. Air benders started to appear again after the war, but there were still no fire benders.

Katara POV:

My dad, Hakoda speeds down the freshly paved road, through a forest in an old black truck. I'm is sitting in the back of the car with a bored expression on my face as I'm is looking out of the small car window. I noticed a small sign in the distance. "Imperial village. Home to water, earth and air benders. Population 8934". Hakoda makes a sharp turn around the corner and then a sudden stop. I quickly jump out of the car to look at where I will be living for the next 6 months. It was a medium-sized house which was made out of wood and was a blue and white color. "Here we are, home sweet home," my dad says with a joyful expression on his face.

He opens the creaky blue door and gestures with his hand for me to come inside. I take a few steps inside as my dad trails behind me. My dad was a kind man and always tried his best to keep a smile on my face, except it has been hard with my Mom gone for so long. It's also hard because we're not really related. My parents left me when I was too young to remember so I've lived my whole life with Hakoda and Kya, my mother. My mother died during the war and all I have left of her is this water tribe necklace. My dad shows me up the carpeted white stair, down a small hallway to my room. Like the rest of the house, it was all blue. It must have to do with my dad being a water tribe member. "Heres your room," my dad says with the same cheerful expression. He hugs me "I'm really happy to have you here," he says. I return the hug and smile "thanks" I say.

Our hug is quickly interrupted by a knock on the door. "It's Bato" I hear from the other side of the door. "Coming," my dad says as he quickly runs down the stairs. I trail behind him unsure of who this is. My dad opens the door to reveal a man around the same age as my father as well as a boy behind him. "You recognize me, right Katara, I'm a childhood friend of your father," Bato says. I begin to start to fabricate my lie before my father interrupts me. "It's fine you haven't seen him for a long time," my dad says. "Remember me!" the boy says as he jumps out in front of Bato. The boy looked about my age. I squink as I begin to look at his face again. "Sokka?!" I say with a confused, but excited look on my face (Sokka is not Katara's brother in this story). "Glad you remember me," Sokka says with a smile on his face. "Surprised you remember him," my dad says. I remembered him from before the war. We were friends before- I don't want to remember the things that happened as I stop myself. "We'll see you around they say" but I hardly notice them driving into the distance as I am lost in thoughts.

"Snap out of it Katara," my dad says as he steps in front of me.  "You were thinking about Mom, weren't you"?  I was still lost in thought standing frozen at our doorstep when I notice my dad had hugged me.  I finally snap out of it and step away from my dad.  "I'm going to my room, it's getting dark and I have school tomorrow".  My dad begins to slightly frown until he says "okay, goodnight" with a grin on his face once again.  I walk up to my bedroom once again and decide to lie on my bed with many thoughts flowing through my mind.  I see my suitcase full of my various possessions in the corner of the room.   I subconsciously decided to deal with those tomorrow.  I take a deep breath through my nose and out through my mouth to clear my head and get a good night's rest.
