Ithought for a moment and then nodded."Let's go out now. We'll have a better chance of meeting someone in the daylight rather than nighttime."

"Nighttime is my bedtime too,"Amber nodded."So I think you made a good choice."

I laughed, and she smiled."As long a you're with me, there isn't going to be a bedtime. Now keep close to me while we walk."

She nodded quickly, and opened the door. I grabbed my wounded shoulder and hobbled down the stairs. Amber skipped down next to me and ran across the lawn over to the shed to wait. I trekked over to the gate and Amber ran along with me. She threw open the gate and we both walked near the cars plowed together.

"Stay down! Officer of the law!"

We both dropped down, hiding behind one of the cars.

"Dude, we aren't officers. We just have a gun."

"But we looted it off an officer's body! I got his badge too!"

"Have you turned into the purple man?"

"Yeah! I'm shooting all the little kids and stuffing them into animatronic suits! Pew! Pew! Pew!"

Amber pulled back beside me, starting to hyperventilate."Their gonna hurt me Addie!"

I ruffled her hair."No they aren't. Their just messing around. You'll know when your older."

"Step out! We won't shoot unless you're a monster."

I slowly stood up, raising my arms. Ahead of me was a short blonde haired girl and a brown haired girl. The brown haired girl was pointing a gun at my head. The blonde was quivering, scared of what would come next. Amber slowly peered out, looking confused and scared. Both girls just stared in awe, but exchanging glances and nodding.

"We won't shoot,"the blonde said."I'm Melissa. This is my friend, Maya."

I nodded."I'm Addie." I think I've seen Melissa before, but I don't know Maya. I thought.

"Who's your little sis?"Maya questioned.

"Oh..."I said."She's not my sister. I'm... her babysitter. I was with her when it broke out."

Melissa nodded. Amber looked up at me and crossed her arms. She could obviously see through my lie.

"I own a farm with my family only a drive away,"Melissa commented."I can offer you guys a nice place until the national guard rolls through."

"So what are you guys doing here? This place is already looted to h*ll."

"We were chasing after one of them. But it got away. We thought you were the... Thing."

"I'm not that ugly!"I exclaimed. Melissa, Maya, and I erupted into a laughing fit. Amber is quiet.

Maya nodded towards the cars."My car has gas in it. At the farm, we can refuel. Help me with this."

I leaned against on of the cars, pushing it off to the side. Melissa pushed the end, and Maya helped push on the other side. We all groaned, and I guess it attracted a few visitors. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a walker. Amber stepped away, fear showing in her eyes.

"Put your back into it!"Maya yelled.

The walker was drawing nearer. Maya slowly withdrew her gun. She knew noise attracted more. It was common sense. I was finally able to push the car out of the way. Melissa nodded to me and Amber. We piled into the car, scared. The walker had to be only a few yards away as Melissa stepped on the gas. We bumped into a car poking out, but we made a speedy getaway. Amber looked back at the house as it slowly disappeared from our sight.

I leaned my head back, settling into the leather cushion.

But I would never settle into this new life.
