"Hey, wake up."
I blinked my eyes a few times before realizing it was morning. A tall blond man loomed over me. He flashed a huge smile and reached his hand to pull me up. I took his hand and he pulled me back. My heart was pounding in my head. Shane?! What the heck?! He's a lot more handsome than I remember.
"I'm all itchy,"Amber said as she scratched her arm.
"You slept in a barn, little lady,"Shane said."Lucky you don't have spiders in your hair."
Amber screamed as she looked at her hair."Wahh!"
Shane laughed."But I'm sure your big sister scared them away."
I grabbed the back of my neck."I'm not her little sister. I'm Addie. That's Amber."
"I'm Shane."
I'm am not going to get used to this.
Suddenly, a girl about the age of 10 popped into the barn."Shane! Shane! Jay said I can go drive a tractor!"
My mouth dropped open, and I tried to refrain from screaming. HOLLY?! WHAT THE ACTUAL F...!
"That's Ace." Shane smiled as we walked out of the barn.
"She's a lively one."
"You got that right." A boy that looked almost the same as Shane with brunette hair."I'm Jay. Shane and I sort of took her in after this all started."
I looked between the two.
"What's so wrong with two guys raising a little kid in an apocalypse, huh?" Shane started to raise his voice, but Jay placed his hand on his friend's shoulder. Shane sighed.
"I can watch over the little one while you work on the fence,"Jay volunteered."'Cause she's reinforcing the fence... You know..." He looked down at the ground, blushing.
I nodded."I'll help."
Shane walked back to his truck to work on it. Amber sat next to Jay and they began to talk. It left me to go talk to Mango in the barn, and Melissa in the bank with Ace (Holly? Should I still try to call her that?) I trotted over to Ace and Melissa. Ace was sitting on the tractor while Melissa was hammering some nails to fortify the fence.
"Hey."
"Hey!"Melissa said."Give me a hand?"
I went over to help her hammer in some nails. She went over to cut the two by fours to length. Ace was on the tractor, pretending to drive it. Master of randomness, eh? This kind of suits her! Melissa opened her mouth to say something, but closed it. I looked over.
"You need something?"I asked.
She shook her head."I saw some crazy crap when I was in the city. It was scary. I can't imagine anyone being there now."
"What is it?" I urged her on further.
"When this whole thing started... I was running back to the farm." She choked on her words, holding back tears."I saw a cop shoot a kid point blank in the face. I was terrified."
"Was he one of them?"
"I don't know... But his ruthlessness... He just turned around and, baam! Right through his brain."
I shuddered at her words. She just stared out at the corn fields. I hammered in one last nail before standing up.
"You okay?"
"Hopefully the national guard 'll role through and do their thing... So this will all end." She sighed."Thanks for helping me get that off my chest."
"Anytime,"I nodded. We hugged for a brief moment until I saw Shane walking over.
He stuck his tongue out."Eew."
"Shut up, idiot!"I yelled.
We all laughed.
"Hey,"Shane finally said,"Addie, could I get your help."
I nodded."Sure."
