It had been a few weeks since the crash that had killed her parents, Melayna had moved in with Bobby after social services had agreed to let him take her in. She was struggling quite a bit, the nightmares were the worst part of it. She had practically recovered from her injuries and knew she needed to get back to college, but she just didn't have the energy at the moment. She hadn't slept well the night before and decided to head downstairs even though it was only six in the morning. She tried to be very quiet in case Bobby was still sleeping, she hated that she had kept him up most of the night again. But to her shock when she got downstairs he was there and had already made a coffee for her."Morning sweetie," he said softly with a soft smile. "How are you feeling?" He knew what the answer would be, that was okay when she wasn't. He picked up the coffee and handed it to her.
"I'm okay Bobby, just a little tired," she said with a slight laugh and took a drink of her coffee. "You at work today?" she asked. She hated being home alone and normally went to the station when he was working.
"Yes, are you coming in with me again?" he asked with a smile. She seemed to love being around the team rather than being at home.
"I will be," she said with a bright smile. Her eyes glistened a little, she had become close to all of them. They were all like family to her and Bobby was now like a father figure to her. Things had been rough for her, but he had been there for her through it all. Bobby smiled and chuckled gently. "I thought you would be, one day you will stay home alone." He laughed and took a sip of his coffee. He wasn't going to force her to stay home.
"We will have to get ready soon if you're wanting to come into work with me, my shift starts soon." He looked down at her, she was quite short compared to him. He was glad she had almost recovered from all of her injuries. "How is your walking today? Are you still limping?" he asked looking concerned. He worried too much, but it was natural for him.
"A little, but its getting better. Hopefully it will go soon," she said with a soft smile. She was quite confident that she would make a full recovery but she was still worried that she may not. She didn't want to be stuck with a limp but she would have to cope with it if she did.
Bobby nodded. "That's good. Hopefully it will yes." He still looked concerned. She hadn't been taking it easy like the doctors had told her and if he tried to stop her from doing anything, she would snap at him. "Just take it easy, you don't want to make it worse again." He headed upstairs to get changed for his shift. As he headed back down he could hear her talking. He smiled to himself.
He walked into the living room and saw Buck stood there chatting away to her. "Buck, what are you doing here?" he asked with a slight look of shock upon his face. He stared at Buck for a moment and then back at Melayna. "I came to see how Layna was doing?" Buck said with a smile. "We all worry about her, Bobby."
Melayna looked slightly embarrassed, she hated making people worry. She headed out to the car without saying a word and got in staying silent as she waited for Bobby to get in.
Why are they worrying about me so much? Do they think I'm too fragile? Do they think I'm going to fall apart?" She thought with a bit of a sigh not realising Bobby was there.
Bobby heard her sigh. "Okay, what's up? You have been off since you got up this morning. Are you sure you're alright. You can talk to me about anything," he said as he started the engine and started to drive to work.
Melayna smiled. "I'm fine Bobby." The truth was she felt down because she felt like she didn't really had a family anymore, not a proper family. She felt like an outsider, she wasn't related to any of them by blood and sometimes it could make her feel a little awkward. But she was grateful to have them all in her life.
The sun was starting to rise making the sky an orange colour. "Looks like the sky is on fire," she said and set off to laugh as she stared out of window. She took a deep breath, she didn't know why she was so nervous that day. "I think next week I want to go back to school."
Bobby kept his eye on the road. "Are you sure you're ready? We don't want you going back and getting to overwhelmed," he said as he pulled up outside the station. "We are here." He smiled to himself and got out of the car heading into the station, handing her the keys to lock it. He headed into his office first to get some paperwork. He had a surprise for her. He was nervous to ask her if it would be okay for him to do this. He had been up most of the night worried that she would decline it. He wanted to do it in front of the whole team and he wanted it to be a special moment for all of them because he knew how much she meant to all of them.
He saw her coming into the station and couldn't help but smile brightly. Now he was excited, but still worried as they all gathered to talk to her. Melayna frowned a little, it wasn't like them to all crowd around her. It was making her feel nervous but safe at the same time, she didn't know how that was possible.
She looked at Bobby who was starting to approach and saw the excited look on his face. "What's going on Bobby? Why are you so excited?" she asked curiously.
Bobby chuckled gently. "Well I have something to ask you. You have been living with me for a few weeks now and you get on well with my team. You are practically like family to us all now. I wanted to ask...if..." He trailed off his sentence really nervous. "If you would like to officially become my daughter." He handed her the papers that just needed to be signed by her.
Melayna was speechless at first and so were the rest of the team, they were quite shocked. "You want to adopt me?" she asked, her voice a little shaky and tears glistened in her eyes. Bobby nodded. "Yes I do."
She stood there for a moment looking down at the paperwork that said Melayna Nash on it. "Yes...I would love that!"
